Corded and cordless hedge trimmers are great options for speeding through some dang brush. But both have trade-offs when compared to the other. Today, I want to break down which types of hedge trimmers I prefer, while carefully weighing the pros and cons of both.

Got hedges, shrubs, bushes, and trees that need to be trimmed and pruned? Clipping each branch manually just isn’t feasible, especially if you have a lot of landscaping plants. A power tool is the only way to get the job done in a reasonable time. Does the idea of a noisy, gas-powered hedge trimmer give you a headache? Are you worried about working too hard with a trimmer that’s bulky, heavy, and tiring?

You’re not alone. Let me break down what I look for in a hedge trimmer.

My experience with electric hedge trimmers

Both are great options in my experience, but I want you to make up your own mind.

How do electric hedge trimmers compare to gas?

If you’ve primarily used gas-powered lawn and garden equipment, you may have concerns about using a battery powered tool. But, rest assured that these hedge trimmers can get the job done. Corded electric hedge trimmers have a lot to like. Here are my favorite things about them:

They are less expensive than battery-powered hedge trimmers
Corded hedge trimmers can run as long as you pay your utility bill
They are super lightweight since they don’t have a battery
For some reason, they last FOREVER. Like too long. I want a new one but my corded electric hedge trimmer from the 90s just won’t die.

Cons of corded electric hedge trimmers

While corded electric hedge trimmers have a lot of positives, they have one main negative. With the cord constantly providing tension to the entire unit, it can be difficult to control the trimmer. Most of these trimmers have a way to tie the cord into the back so that it doesn’t pull out of the back of the hedge trimmer, causing you to stop and plug it back in.

Despite these hooks, you can still pull the cord out from the wall which is even more frustrating. With corded hedge trimmers, you definitely will sacrifice a bit of control.

Cordless hedge trimmers: Benefits and downside explained

Cordless or battery-powered hedge trimmers are sweet tools – but just like corded hedge trimmers, they have some good and some bad. Let me explain.

Pros of cordless hedge trimmers

Cordless hedge trimmers have several benefits that make them absolutely bad-as-heck tools. I love using them and here’s why:

They are super easy to control. No cord weighing you down means you have 360 degree control of whatever it is that you are trimming.
You can use the battery on a cordless hedge trimmer with other tools. That means you can save big by buying the tool only version of a hedge trimmer.
Cordless hedge trimmers are quiet and require virtually no maintenance.

Cons of cordless hedge trimmers

Despite being beautiful and easy to control machines, they do have a few downsides such as:

Cordless hedge trimmers can be slightly heavier due to the batteries. They will weigh you down a bit compared to a corded hedge trimmer.
They’re often more expensive than their corded counterparts. Batteries cost money!
Cordless hedge trimmers don’t have infinite run time, you have to recharge the batteries. Fortunately with cordless trimmers, you have a decent amount of run time compared to a mower or other battery powered lawn tool.

Corded electric hedge trimmer: My recommendation

My favorite corded hedge trimmer is the Worx 24 inch 4.5A hedge trimmer. I was looking at a bunch of different hedge trimmers, but this one has some serious innovations that make it a beast. When you look at electric hedge trimmers, Black and Decker hedge trimmers seemingly dominate the market.

Here are a few things I like about the WORX corded electric hedge trimmer that led to me ranking it number one:

Perfect length at 24 inches
Dual action blades – this is standard on most hedge trimmers now and basically just means the blades move up and down in both directions, increasing efficiency
Extremely light at only seven pounds
Has an in-line motor – which basically means the motor is in line with the handle and not off to the side. This makes it basically feel like a big sword instead of a motor with some blades coming out.
Rotating cutting head – means you can rotate the entire set of blades sideways on either side, making it easy to handle when doing precision cutting. This is a unique feature to this hedge trimmer and is a big reason why it ranked number one.

Worx has some innovative tools out there despite not really being a household name. This is one I would definitely check out.

The whole thing is well under $100 and can be bought at Home Depot for an insane price. You can also buy it on Amazon, but it looks to be a little more expensive over there.

Top cordless electric hedge trimmer

My favorite battery hedge trimmer (in my opinion) is the Milwaukee M18 FUEL hedge trimmer. I like this one because it is super solid and has some really cool features. I’m not surprised to see a Milwaukee tool at the top because Milwaukee’s M18 mower is also a freaking beast.

Not only is it the perfect length at about 24 inches, but it has a ton of other great features:

Super low vibration and smooth handling
3,400 movements per minutes (it moves quickly)
A brushless motor
The REDLINK plus system that improves performance between the battery and motor
The ability to use the batteries with a TON of Milwaukee tools

It comes in at a decent price from Home Depot where it often goes on sale.

What to love: This trimmer comes in at 22-inches long, putting it at the longer end of Black and Decker trimmers. It also has a wrap-around handle, meaning you aren’t having to torque your wrists at weird angles to get a good cut.
What to not love: This trimmer has a 40V battery, which (in my experience) is less common among Black+Decker products. Also, this thing costs around $100, which is more expensive than most other hedge trimmers, but it is currently on sale on Amazon.

Look, it’s last on the list but it’s competing with 45 other trimmers. It is a great trimmer, especially if you are shorter and have a 40V battery already.

Sadly, I have neither of those things.

For those of you that are looking to get a premium hedge trimmer and could use the 40V battery with other tools, buy the 40V Max Lithium Ion 22-inch Trimmer on Amazon for a great price.

6. Black and Decker 18-Inch Electric Hedge Trimmer (BEHT200)

The Black +Decker 18-inch Electric Hedge Trimmer is pretty basic – and that’s why I love it. First of all, it requires an extension cord. This can be a positive or a negative depending on your perspective. Sure, there’s no battery, but you also have to schlep around a cord and worry about chopping it in half.

The 18-incher from Black and Decker is the perfect size, is super light-weight, and the same wrap around handle as the last trimmer. It also has a full-length handle, meaning your index finger won’t feel all the pressure (literally).

What to love: No battery running out, super lightweight, extremely inexpensive.
What to not love: Cord can drag you down.

Right now, this puppy is selling on Amazon for less than $50. Yep. It is an incredible deal and will take care of pretty much any job you have. If you’re fine with an extension cord, then this will allow you to get going in your yard without any problem at all.

Grab it on Amazon today for astonishingly cheap.

The handle on this is really nice and out of the way of the cord.

5. BLACK+DECKER 20V MAX Cordless Hedge Trimmer with Power Command Powercut, 22-Inch (LHT321FF)

Well, if it sounds like it means business, it probably does. This thing has the bells and whistles. Let’s check it out:

What to love: This is one of the longest hedge trimmers offered by Black and Decker at 22 inches. It also comes with a PowerCut button that provides additional power to cut through thicker branches. I also love the 20V battery, as this is what fits my current Black + Decker power drill.
What to not love: This trimmer has a higher price tag than most, but is honestly worth the money if you do a lot of trimming.

I gotta say, this is currently “Amazon’s Choice” for cordless trimmers. If you want to get the job done quickly, this thing will get you there. Grab it on Amazon (it’s currently on sale), and get started on those bushes today.

4. Black + Decker Electric Hedge Trimmer, 16-inch (BEHT100)

The 16-inch BEHT100 from Black and Decker is a hedge trimmer that is simply….simple. It is the most basic, barebones trimmer offered by them. This means it is one of the smallest and lightest machines they sell.

What to love: The price. This thing currently costs $29 on Amazon. Unreal. It also is super lightweight (4 lbs). If you just want something inexpensive to get the job done, this is going to be just fine.
What to not love: If you are looking for heavy duty action, it simply isn’t here. This is a corded trimmer, it isn’t very long, and its handle is more of a knob. It is basic – but you get what you pay for.

If I’m a new homeowner and my house isn’t furnished yet because I just spent my life savings, then heck yeah I am grabbing this one. It truly is perfectly fine despite the lack of bells and whistles.

Grab it for a super low price today on Amazon (like 6,000 others have) and go take care of those dang bushes.

3. Black + Decker 40V Max Cordless Hedge Trimmer, 24-inch

Okay earlier when I said that number 7 was the biggest and baddest – I lied. This one has a 24-inch blade, or two feet of blades to reach the top of the bushes. It can also handle up to 6000 sq/ft of hedges before it needs to be charged. That’s insane.

Here’s what I love: The length is great, and as tall as I am I still cannot reach the tops of some of these even taller bushes. It has a nice wrap-around handle as well.
Here’s what I don’t love: It is one of the heavier trimmers, at almost 7 lbs. It is also the most expensive. But again, you get what you pay for – and this is a lot of trimmer.

If you don’t mess around, grab this on Amazon for the best price I’ve seen. If you already have the battery, you can actually get it in Amazon for half-price if you get the tool-only version.

2. BLACK+DECKER Electric Hedge Trimmer, 17-Inch (BEHT150)

So, this is basically the same as number four. Except an inch longer and basically the same price – why not go for it?

What to love: The price. This thing currently costs $32 on Amazon. Unreal. It also is super lightweight (4 lbs). If you just want something inexpensive to get the job done, this is going to be just fine.
What to not love: If you are looking for heavy duty action, it simply isn’t here. This is a corded trimmer, it isn’t very long, and its handle is more of a knob. It is basic – but you get what you pay for.

This one is perfect for new homeowners or people that are doing some relatively light work. This makes the most sense when you are shelling out a bunch of money for new lawn equipment.

And it is precisely why I would just go grab it on Amazon for super cheap – an amazing price right now.

Dewalt has really stepped up their game and even made a sleek cordless lawn mower and some really sweet leaf blowers as well. They have a history of great gas products, too, like their huge Dewalt 3400 PSI pressure washer.

How I tested this

I borrowed this hedge trimmer from my brother-in-law for a Youtube video I recorded. It was a great time of year to put it to the test on some bushes in my backyard.

When I was using this hedge trimmer, I was testing it for a few things. Obviously power, but also handling and comfort, battery run-time and charge time, and overall value (price compared to performance).

I’ve tested a bunch of these now and this one was a big surprise.

Using this hedge trimmer is easy and comfortable

Dewalt is known for having a high quality, residential suite of products. Most folks in the construction or commercial landscaping industry are not using Dewalt, but it is one of the most popular brands for folks like you and me walking around Home Depot.

The Dewalt 20V hedge trimmer is super light!

The hedge trimmer is highly usable for residential consumers. As is any other cordless trimmer, the Dewalt is easy to pick up and take wherever you need around your yard.

Further, another aspect of this is the compatibility of the battery. The hedge trimmer comes with a 20V battery that is usable with all of its 20V products. In fact, the Dewalt lawn mower uses the same battery – talk about convenience!

Yep, that means if you own a Dewalt power drill or other battery powered device from them, you can just keep one battery charged and open up space in your garage.

Try to purchase the tool-only version

Tool only means that the hedge trimmer comes without a battery. This is super convenient for Dewalt loyalists who want to leverage their existing suite of 20V tools from Dewalt. Simply pop the battery on to the back and fire up the trimmer, just like any other Dewalt tool you own.

Comfortable grips make a difference

A positive to having a 20V battery is that this will be a relatively light weight hedge trimmer. Additionally, a lack of a cord to lug around will make this tool feel like a feather.

Also, I may be too accustomed to my twenty-year old corded hedge trimmer, but I sensed that this trimmer had much less vibration. Particularly when you first pull this out of the box, the lightweight feel, lack of vibration, and sharp blades make the first few cuts feel really nice.

This hedge trimmer has some serious power

This hedge trimmer boasts a 5.0Ah Lithium Ion battery. While this sounds impressive, you are only going to get so much power out of a battery-powered hedge trimmer.

The first time I ever used a hedge trimmer I pictured it being like using one of those big lumberjack chainsaws. I was disappointed to say the least when I started using one and could not cut through a ¾” inch thick branch.

I am not alone in thinking that this tool does not have the power that you would want or expect. Other reviews that I have read online have pointed out that the hedge trimmer can take a few passes over the same spot to truly get a good cut.

Conversely, the good news here from a low power hedge trimmer is that for most people using this tool, it will not really impact you that much. Most people are used to hedge trimmers taking a few passes because most people (me) wait too long to cut their bushes and end up having to take a million passes to get it trimmed.

For those that obsess over their circular-shaped bushes, this will leave some power to be desired.

Depth matters for cutting thick branches

Something that cracks me up about all of the measurements and data points provided by Dewalt is the trimmer depth. Basically, Dewalt measures the length of the blades and says that length is how thick of a bush it can cut. In your dreams.

Finally, if you think a hedge trimmer can cut through a three quarters of an inch branch, you have gullible written on your forehead. While this product can cut to a depth of three quarters of an inch, it will only get you through a very leafy, brushy hedge.

Cost and value

The Dewalt 20V Hedge Trimmer is selling for anywhere between $200 and $250 from what I can tell. The tool only Dewalt 20V Hedge trimmer sells for about $130 to $150.

Comparable brands like Black and Decker, Greenworks, and Craftsman have virtually identical trimmers for about the same or LESS cost.

In my opinion, the true value of this product is not anything inherent to the product itself. Most battery powered cordless hedge trimmers are going to perform the same. Those who purchase a cordless trimmer for tasks around their relatively small to medium sized yards will be totally fine purchasing any of these.

Who should buy this?

The value of purchasing a Dewalt 20V hedge trimmer comes most to those who already own a suite of Dewalt 20V battery powered items. The tool-only version of this hedge trimmer is significantly cheaper. If you have a 20V battery for this already, you can save a good amount of money, garage space, and electricity by sticking with this brand.

Who should NOT buy this hedge trimmer?

If you have a suite of products from Ryobi, Craftsman, or any of the other brands that have compatible batteries, I do not recommend purchasing this product. Try to find a hedge trimmer with compatible batteries and similar features.

Corded vs Cordless hedge trimmers

Hedge trimmers come in corded and cordless fashions. Corded trimmers have been the default and most popular trimmers on the market for a long time. Trimmers that require you to keep them plugged in have a few negatives, however.

Corded hedge trimmers

I have always used a corded hedge trimmer and the most frustrating part to me is that it comes unplugged pretty easily. I find myself stepping on it, getting it caught on a branch, or tangling my arm around it. Another negative to the long cord is the limited reach provided by the cord. Even for bushes close to my house, I can reach the end of the cord pretty quickly if I am getting on a ladder to cut a tall hedge.

My classic Craftsman corded hedge trimmer doesn’t fail.

Lastly, and this one is probably irrational, but I tend to feel like I am going to get the cord caught in the trimmer and cut it off. This has never happened but it stresses me out when I am working in the yard.

Cordless hedge trimmers

Cordless hedge trimmers are definitely more functional for spending time out in the yard. My concerns about cutting off the wire, getting tangled in wire, and becoming unplugged all go out the window. You will also have a longer range for cutting than you would with a traditional corded hedge trimmer.

Not to mention, if a sibling or friends wants to borrow the Dewalt Hedge trimmer 20V, you don’t have to worry about lugging around a heavy extension cord.
