Why Is The Sun Joe SPX3000 So Popular? My Experience

sun joe pressure washer

The Sun Joe SPX3000 is one of the most popular electric pressure washers because it is inexpensive and easy to use. It sounds a little scary to mix electricity and water like this, but for whatever reason – people are loving it.

The Sun Joe SPX3000 comes in two forms: the normal SPX3000 and the SPX3000-XT1. The XT1 version is the “XTREAM” version, and boy is it extreme (ha!).

Let’s get stated by looking at the following – click to jump ahead

Sun Joe SPX3000 Electric Pressure Washer Review: Features

Sun Joe produces electric lawn and home care equipment. They are popular for their dethatcher (you wouldn’t believe how satisfying it is), and of course their pressure washers. You likely found out about the pressure washer because it has more reviews than I thought humanly possible on Amazon. As of today, the Sun Joe SPX3000 has almost 45,000 reviews and 73% of them are five stars.

People love the SPX3000 but I can tell you right now, it is not for everyone. While one of the least expensive items on the pressure washer market, it certainly has a target demographic. I’ll break down who the target audience is and why this is so popular.

The Power Struggle of the Sun Joe SPX3000

The Sun Joe SPX3000 boasts a 2030 MAX PSI with 14.5 Amps. As a reminder, most pressure washers run about 2000-3000 PSI and are used around the home for cleaning decks, windows, driveways, cars, boats, and siding.

How the power is delivered.

Something to note here that I think has caused a stink among some people who have purchased the SPX3000. The 2030 MAX PSI advertised in the product name means that it has a PSI of 2030 at an absolute maximum. When not using the strongest setting (which is the zero degree setting) that shoots a straight pinhole sized beam of water, you will not get the 2030 PSI.

To learn more about PSI on pressure washers, read our about how to tell the difference between PSI and GPM and why they matter.

Why some people dislike this pressure washer

This is a huge frustration point to many who purchased this for a steal who think they will be able to do everything an industrial power washer can do. It even says in the Amazon product description “Cleans Cars/Fences/Patios”.

Well my friends, it says what it means. This thing is not going to blow off 10 years of grime from your second floor siding from 30 yards away. It is going to provide a pressured wash to items that can withstand moderate pressure like cars, fences, and patios. And it will do a dang good job at just that.

The heavy duty nozzle on the Sun Joe SPX3000 provides a lot of power, but not a very wide stream.

If you have the right expectations for the type of pressure washer you are going to get when you purchase the Sun Joe SPX3000, then you will be fine.

Why this is a best seller

Now you can see why this product is such a hot seller over at Amazon. Most people want to use a pressure washer for relatively light work around their house, condo, apartment, or townhome. They want something light, inexpensive, and tough enough for the job at hand.

The Sun Joe SPX3000 has everything you need for light work – but make sure to keep the work light.

The many nozzles

The Sun Joe SPX3000 comes with five different nozzle attachment tips. A zero degree, fifteen degree, twenty five degree, forty degree and soap tip. The larger the degree of tip you have on the front of this pressure washer, the weaker the spray and the larger the area of coverage.

The five different attachment tips on the SPX3000.

If you are pressure washing an outdoor metal fence, you can use the zero degree tip to blast away anything that is not metal. If you want to clean off your car, try the forty degree or soap tip as to not hurt the paint or any of the trim features.

Sun Joe SPX3000 basking in sunlight.

This Sun Joe SPX3000 also has a twenty foot hose, allowing you to extend your work over a modest sized difference.

The SPX3000 and soap

This pressure washer has two different detergent tanks that you can use to infuse the water in the pressure washer with soap. This means you can easily switch from your car (normal soap) to your deck (a bleach mixture).

Noise and the auto-stop feature on the Sun Joe SPX3000

If your neighbor has ever used a pressure washer, well you would know because it is overly loud and obnoxious. I was walking with my wife in our neighborhood and could hear a neighbor about seven houses down using his pressure washer. As we approached his house, he stopped using the pressure washer and tried talking to us.

We were basically screaming at each other in the middle of the street until my wife faked a massive diarrhea attack and we took off to avoid the conversation (this is a lie).

The beauty of the Sun Joe is that it is a relatively quiet piece of equipment. For whatever reason, gas pressure washers are loud when they are in use and somehow loud when not in use.

The SPX3000 has a feature that turns off the whole machine, then turns it back on when you squeeze the trigger. This feature is super similar to a car that turns off at red lights and kicks back on when you press the gas. While not a huge selling point, it makes a difference with your ears and with your neighbors.

Storage and maintenance on the Sun Joe SPX3000

This product only weighs about 28 lbs, meaning it will fit into just about any portion of your garage, shed, or even inside your house. Being an electric device means that very little maintenance is required. You simply plug it in and it will do its thing, unlike gas powered pressure washers that rely on…gas.

The Sun Joe SPX3000 is super light, making it easy to store and maintain.

The SPX3000 also comes with a full two year warranty. While this is great, keep in mind that folks usually only use their pressure washer a couple of times per year. Make sure to get as much use out of it as possible for the two years are up in case anything is going to go wrong.

Sun Joe SPX3000 vs SPX3001

The only real difference between the SPX3000 and the SPX3001 is the hose reel. The SPX3001 comes with a hose reel that allows you to reel back in the hose instead of having to disconnect it and hand-wind it. This is a nice little convenience that comes at only $2 more on Amazon (right now). I think this is definitely worth the extra cost because you can more easily store your pressure washer.

What I didn’t like about this pressure washer

The Sun Joe SPX 3000 has a ton of reviews. While most are good, some are quite negative. Keep in mind that this product does not pretend to be an ultra strength pressure washing system. It is a mild strength pressure washer for light work.

If you’d like to pressure wash a big driveway or walkway, I recommend a larger, more powerful gas pressure washer. You can get decent pressure from the Sun Joe SPX3000, but the size of the spray at 0 degrees will only be an inch or two thick. It would take a very long time to wash concrete of decent size with that spray width.

Pressure issues aside, others have found a leaking issue with their pressure washer. Around the base where you connect the hose to the pressure washer, a plastic adapter was used. More recently, this has been replaced by an aluminum connector that has reduced the leaking issue.

This plastic fitting gives a lot of people problems.

This pressure washer is super cheap

Do not get your expectations up way too high for this product. It is plastic and costs somewhere between $150 and $200. This is a very inexpensive pressure washer, especially when compared to some of the gas powered pressure washers

For the power that it provides, the cost that it is, and the jobs that you can do with it – it is a great value.

Our overall review: The Sun Joe SPX3000

The Sun Joe SPX3000 is a great pressure washer for people who are doing lighter jobs. I would recommend this pressure washer for cleaning cars, boats, windows, or very small deck or patio work.

Instagram vs. Reality.

If you are wanting to blast off a long sidewalk or a driveway, you will absolutely need a gas powered pressure washer. The power from this pressure washer simply will not get you good results for tough, dirty jobs.

That being said, if you live in a condo, townhome or apartment, this is the best pressure washer for the money. You can easily store this in a utility closet and will likely not have a job too big for the Sun Joe SPX3000. This will be great for your small patio, walkway, or outdoor furniture. You truly cannot beat the price.

The Sun Joe SPX3000 is currently on sale over at Amazon for about $40 lower than the listed price. Buy it today and start the Spring with a fresh clean.

I’ve Used The Ryobi 40V Expand-It Weed Eater For 7 Years

The Ryobi 40V weed eater was the first weed eater I ever owned, so it makes this product super easy to review.

In fact, I bought the Expand-It version with the blower and edger attachments. Ryobi has a series of 40V lawn equipment, most notably the tools I just mentioned here. Recently, Ryobi has gotten into the lawn mower game as well.

The Ryobi 40V weed eater is a great trimmer but there are a few things you should know before buying. For starters, don’t get the blower attachment. Secondly, buy a different weed eater string (like this one). Otherwise – the edger attachment is great and the whole tool has lasted me well over 5 years.

You can grab it with the battery on Amazon for a great price or at Home Depot (where it may actually be cheaper).

Today we are going to review:

Why would I buy a Ryobi electric weed eater?

There are a few reasons to check out an electric weed eater when picking out your next lawn and garden tool kit. As compared to gas-powered weed eaters, electric weed eaters tend to be easier to use and maintain. At the end of a long winter season, you may have to refuel your gas powered weed eater and crank it a few times before you can get it to start. With the Ryobi 40V weed eater and other electric weed eaters, you simply place the battery and you are ready to go.

Another benefit to electric trimmers and attachment capable systems is the lack of maintenance. You will not have to do anything to maintain an electric trimmer other than change out the line. No oil change, no filter change, and no messy gasoline spills.

If you are a Ryobi loyalist and have one of their mowers, then you can actually use this same 40 volt battery in both the mower and the trimmer. More on that later.

Ryobi 40V weed eater parts

The diagram below shows all of the parts involved in the Ryobi 40V weed eater. As you can see, this product detaches just below the handle to allow for other attachments.

To detach the attachments, simply untwist the knob and press the silver button to pull out the attachment. Likewise, to reattach another attachment, simply align the silver button with the hole and slide in. Twist the knob to tighten in place and you are ready to go.

As you can see, the bottom has a “Reel Easy” (ha) bump feed string head with a “speed” winder. When you get low on string, the head has a button that will push out a little bit more if tapped.

The “Reel Easy” head of the Ryobi 40V trimmer.

Ryobi 40V weed eater tool only

If you already have a Ryobi 40V battery, you can purchase this product “tool-only”. A tool only product comes without the battery and is generally a lower price. This is great for those that have multiple Ryobi products, like the Ryobi mower.

Ryobi 40V weed eater diagram from Ryobi’s website.

Reviewing the Ryobi battery-powered weed eater

Let’s take a look at all of the things you should consider before buying a new weed eater.

Power output on the Ryobi 40V weed eater

The Ryobi 40V Expand It system has a modest amount of power. Honestly, I did not feel like the weed eater packed nearly the punch that its gas powered counterparts do.

Further, the electric weed eaters have to really “wind up” and get momentum before they reach their full speed. Because this tool isn’t specifically designed for weed eaters, it has to be very adaptable in how it produces power.

There is a little rod that twists around inside the attachment which drives the speed of the head. Torque is applied all the way down the rod and you can tell a lot of energy gets lost in the process.

If you are looking for a weed eater that can take on a big job, the Ryobi 40V weed eater simply is not your tool. For small yards and some light brushwork, this weed eater will do just fine.

A step up in power from this weed eater is the slightly more expensive EGO Power+ Multi-head tool with the string trimmer attachment is amazing.

Durability and usability

The Ryobi weed eater is one that has lasted surprisingly long. I have had mine for over three years and only replaced the line one time. It has consistently operated at full capacity and I have never had issues with breaking, slowing down, or otherwise. One thing I don’t like about the handle of this particular weed eater is that it always feels like it is in the wrong spot.

With the Ryobi 40V weed whacker having multiple attachment heads, it means you can really slide the attachment into the tool facing any direction. While this might seem convenient, it’s really hard to tell which angle you should keep it at for the best trim job. When I use the weed eater, I feel like I am holding the trimmer at a weird angle and twisting my wrists or arms to make it go where I want it to go – not very comfortable.

Make sure not to get this one.

UPDATE: I took the guard off of this weed eater and it performs way better and is so much easier to use. Take it off and throw it out!

Comfort and feel

Another downside of this weed eater is the balance. Consider that this battery is also used on their lawn mower and a ton of other products in their 40V lineup of tools, meaning it is quite heavy. The tool feels great, light, and balanced before I add the battery. Once the battery is added, you have to exert a lot of upward pressure on the back of the weed eater, making straight lines and other maneuvering very difficult.

I know it sounds silly, but when you start to feel that burn in your shoulder and neck area from holding a weird position, you will regret not buying a better balanced product. I have not seen an available shoulder sling or other device that can help keep it aligned, either.

The heavy battery that accompanies the Ryobi 40V weed eater.

Maintenance and string replacement of the Ryobi electric weed eater

As mentioned previously, maintenance is not required at all on this product. You will have to replace the strings, however. Replacing the strings on this weed eater was one of the more infuriating moments of my life. I really struggled to figure it out on my own and had to make the below video on YouTube to get it right.

Finally got it!

Replacing strings on these is super frustrating because you have to very delicately weave it through while trying to maintain the bundled line from falling out and making a big slinky.

Battery life

The Ryobi 40V battery is also used for the mower, so you better hope that it lasts for a long time if you only use the weed eater. It does. The weed eater lasts a really long time in my experience.

When I have used this attachment, I usually start with the trimmer attachment, then switch to the edging attachment, then finish off with the blower. To my knowledge, I have only gone through the battery fully one time. The first day of the spring season, I edged my lawn for the first time of the year and dug up a lot of dirt. When finishing off with the mower, the battery died.

For most small jobs and especially for the weed eater, you will not have any issues with getting your job completed.

To summarize our review, the Ryobi 40V weed eater is a good weed eater if you have a relatively small yard and/or small job. This weed eater is simply not very comfortable to use, but makes up for the lack of comfort with sheer convenience. The ability to just attach the battery and start on the job makes this super easy for those with not much land to cover.

The fully assembled Ryobi 40V weed eater.

I recommend this weed eater due to the ability to leverage this battery with other Ryobi tools, its convenience and simplicity, and using the various attachments to have an all-in-one approach to taking care of your yard.

If you have a big yard or typically spend a lot of time trimming, I would check out one of the gas powered weed eaters like the ECHO SRM-225, a staple in the lawn community.

Troy Bilt TB160 Gas Powered Mower Review: 6 Years Later

The Troy Bilt TB160 is one of the most affordable lawn mowers on the market. Which is why I bought it.

The TB160 is a push mower, which is great for small yards or people who just love to exercise while mowing. This mower boasts a 160cc Honda engine – which can be confusing for those that may think this is a Honda GCV160

The Troy Bilt TB160 was the first mower that I ever owned. I used this mower for a relatively small yard and still own it to this day. I have had to do very little maintenance on the mower and store it in my garage during the winter.

Today, we will review the Troy Bilt TB160 and give some thoughts on whether this mower is the best for you.

Jump to a section:

2024 Update: I have now owned this mower for six years. As many times as I have literally folded it and put it away with plans to never use it again. A week later, I inevitably pull it out and start using it again. I can’t keep away!

A message for first time mower owners

Though it may seem like a silly question, it’s important to recognize that this is a mower for people who may have just purchased their first home and have a small yard. We all start somewhere, so let’s start this mower.

When first removing this mower from the box, you will think to yourself: “How is the box this small?”. Well, the folks at Troy-Bilt have efficiently packaged everything into a box that will fit into the back of a small trunk. This is because many folks buy these mowers on Amazon or at Home Depot

Troy Bilt TB160 Honda engine close-up.

Troy-Bilt TB160 assembly

Assembling the TB160 is straightforward – you simply pull apart the metal railing that accompanies the box and tighten the screws on the side of the mower. Be careful to avoid cutting the black zip tie that holds the cord to the side of the handle. It definitely looks like something that should be removed, however its purpose is to keep the cord attached to the handle rail (and not flying all over the place).

Make sure that your mower has the appropriate level of fuel and oil to get started. Please refer to the owners manual for how much fuel and oil to put into this machine.

Where the action happens.

You will also want to make sure the mower is at an appropriate height for your lawn. I have my mower sitting as tall as it can go. You can adjust the height of the mower by moving the levers that are on the sides of each wheel. There is a red looking tab that sticks up. Simply pull it out of place and shift it whichever direction will either raise or lower the mower.

A taller mower will trim the grass and be easier to push. A shorter mower distance will cut the grass very short and be more difficult to push.

How to start the TB160

The Troy Bilt TB160 has a red, foldable metal bar over where the handle is located. Simply fold the red bar down onto the handle and hold with one hand. While holding that part down, grab the plastic handle with the string attached near the engine. This is a pull-start mower, meaning you will have to yank the plastic handle pretty hard a few times to get it going.

For first time mower users, it can take a couple of tries to get this down. Once more oil and gas have run through the engine, it will become easier. This engine from Honda has an auto-choke system, so no choke is required to get this engine started.

Review of the Troy-Bilt TB160: a guide to each element

Let’s review all of the different things that make a good mower below.

Difficulty to push

The Troy-Bilt TB160 is a push mower – and that means you will really have to push. If you have this mower on a tall-grass setting (which I recommend), you won’t have much difficulty pushing. This mower does not propel itself and will require some effort to get going.

One thing I like about the TB160 is that it is relatively light. This makes it easier to maneuver and spin as compared to some other mowers.

Something I dislike about this mower is that it isn’t exactly a comfortable mower. The handle is pure metal and has quite a bit of vibration from the engine. The wheels are plastic as well, which seems to amplify the vibration instead of absorbing it. The plastic wheels also make it more difficult to maneuver than rubber-wheeled mowers as it tends to get stuck more easily in small divots.

Using the bag on the TB160

The TB160 is a mower I always used without the bag. Honestly, I did not think this mower did a great job of providing enough kickback of grass into the bag. For this reason, it would consistently get “clogged” and shut off the blade whenever a decent amount of grass began to load.

Another thing I noticed about the bag is that it simply isn’t intuitive to place on the mower. My wife and I always had difficulty replacing the bag and found that removing it often spilled the grass everywhere.

Durability and reliability

Something I love about the Troy Bilt TB160 is the Honda engine. As we are all familiar, Honda engines are reliable in cars and motorcycles. The same holds true here – this is an easy to maintain, durable lawn mower.

Photo cred: Home Depot.

I’ve done hundreds of mows with this mower and it simply won’t quit. It’s easy to start, requires very little maintenance, and stores well indoors or outdoors. Simply put, the TB160 can handle some abuse and the Honda motor will run as long as you do.

Changing the oil on a Troy-Bilt TB160

While probably unnecessary, I change the oil on my TB160 at the beginning of each spring. To change the oil, you simply remove the cap on the side of the engine. Once removed, tilt the mower on its side and let the oil flow into a pan. Once all of the oil has spilled, refill with the manufacturer’s recommended oil. That’s it.

As far as spark plugs or any other maintenance goes, I have not had to do anything. In fact, I’ve never even sharpened the blades on this mower. To maintain the longevity of the mower, you can spray the bottom of the blades with a rust preventer each winter when you aren’t using it as much.

The cost and value of this mower

The TB160 is one of the more affordable push lawn mowers on the market. We got ours at Home Depot a few years ago, but I am still seeing them for sale at places like Walmart, Lowes, and Amazon.

The price range for a TB160 is anywhere from $250 to $400 depending on when you are buying and where you are buying your mower.

Mine is much dirtier now, but this is a fresh one.

I believe the TB160 is a great value for a mower. This mower will last many years, requires little upkeep, stores easily, and is relatively inexpensive.

Are Troy-Bilt push mowers good?

It depends on how you define good. If you have a small yard, are looking for an affordable mower, and don’t mind getting some exercise during your mow, then this is a great mower.

For the price, you really cannot beat this mower. It will most likely outlive your car and is way easier to maintain. I have had mine for over four years and have only done a couple of oil changes and used less than a can of gas the entire time.

My TB160 – always reliable and gets the job done.

Why I Love The Classic ECHO SRM-225 String Trimmer

If you want a weed eater that is hungry, you have come to the right place with the ECHO Weed Eater SRM 225. This is one of the best-selling, timeless weed eaters on the market – for landscapers and homeowners alike.

I have been burned with bad trimmer purchases before, so this is a soft spot for me. Today we will review all the aspects of this ECHO weed eater and help clear up any remaining doubts you may have. Let’s get started:

Main takeaway: The ECHO SRM 225 is a reliable, powerful string trimmer that will last you over a decade. You can’t go wrong with this one.

Features of the ECHO SRM 225 String Trimmer

To properly review the ECHO SRM 225, we need to evaluate its power, ease of use, line advancement and added functions. Let’s get started with power:

Photo cred: ECHO.

Power output of the ECHO SRM 225

The ECHO SRM-225 has a two stroke engine, boasting 21.2 ccs. While on the lower end of its peers for cubic capacity, this machine still packs quite the punch. Often described as a “workhorse” weed eater, this thing can go as long as you will let it.

I wouldn’t let the lower-end of the cc’s bother you. A lot of the competitors are used for commercial landscaping. If you’re a homeowner and using this around your yard, this is going to be a beast and almost certainly more powerful than any battery-powered weed wacker.

In fact, ECHO is so certain in the power and durability of their machines that they provide a 5 year warranty for normal consumers like you and me.

Also – this thing has a 17 inch cutting swath. 17! That is probably the widest cutting swath I’ve seen on any residential weed eater. Cutting swath is used to measure the diameter of the string trimmer when it’s spinning. Larger swath means you have a larger cutting area.

Comfort level and ease of use

The ECHO SRM-225 weighs in at about eleven and a half pounds and 71 inches when fully assembled. It has anti vibration technology and a shoulder strap that is sold separately. For those of us that love straight lines, the shoulder strap provides a great way to keep a solid line to trim around your beloved garden, shed, or chicken coop.

Line advancement on the ECHO SRM-225

Something else I love about this trimmer is the automatic line-advance system. While most trimmers come with this technology, the line is way easier to feed and reload than some of the competitors.

If you have any experience with trimmers, you will know that if you bump into something with the head of the trimmer, it will spit out a little bit more line. This process tells you to “back off” a little bit and provides the extra room you need.

Another trimmer we reviewed, the Stihl FS 56 RC, has similar features if interested.

Gas vs. electric trimmers

The gas power on the ECHO SRM 225 is unbeatable. I have toyed around with electric trimmers before, and while they can be handy, they do not come close to gas. My electric trimmer (the RYOBI 40V trimmer) feels like it bounces around or slows down whenever there is any bit of pressure applied.

Gas powered trimmers like the ECHO weed eater mentioned here are ruthless. They will cut through whatever you want them to until they run out of line. If you have never used a gas powered weed eater, start with the ECHO and experience the difference.

Ignition switch.

There is a reason every landscaping company uses gas powered weed eaters. Next time you drive by a landscaping company, check out what they are using. I almost guarantee one of them is using an ECHO trimmer.

Ability to add attachments

There is the ability to add a blade package to this device for super dense brush. I personally don’t use this, but it is nice for those with acreage and brush.

While some of the electric trimmers have multiple attachments that can be convenient, the ECHO weed eater is just one tool with one purpose. And it absolutely crushes that purpose.

Criticisms of the ECHO weed eater SRM 225

As does any best-selling product have some negative reviews, so does the ECHO weed eater. Something I have consistently seen but not experienced is the blowback from the power of this trimmer. The machine does have a small shield at the bottom (especially compared to its peers) that does not fully protect against dirt and rocks kicking up into your face.

The narrow head of the ECHO SRM 225 weed eater.

If you are wearing safety glasses as recommended, then this should not be too much of an issue for you. After all, dirt is good for you, right?

Another criticism I have seen is with inability to get it started. With the proper 50:1 gas to oil mixture, this should not have any reason getting started.

Replacing the trimmer line

When you do run out of line on the ECHO weed eater, make sure to replace it with .095” weed eater string. This line is easy to load. Simply align the holes on the head of the trimmer, insert the line through to the desired length on the other side, then spin the head until the appropriate amount has fed through.

Restringing is a breeze.

We developed our own string trimmer line that absolutely slaps and made our ECHO SRM 225 even better. Check it out here!

Cost and value

The ECHO weed eater SRM 225 costs about $220 to $250 at the time this article was written. Compared to other similar weed eaters and trimmers, this is about middle of the pack for price.

You can grab the ECHO SRM 225 from Home Depot for the best price I’ve seen.

For the value, I believe this is one of the most valuable purchases you can make. The ECHO will last you many years and as many jobs as you will need it for. Continue to take care of it and it will take care of you.

The reason we started this website in the first place was because we had so much trouble trying to find reasonable, understandable, honest reviews for lawn equipment. And it’s not cheap! After hours and hours of research, trying products and returning them, and messing up our yards – we started this site.

We take tool testing seriously!

As people who had to learn the hard way, we want you to know exactly what you are signing up for before you purchase a piece of equipment. That’s why we are committed to providing honest, easy-to-understand reviews that mean something.

What to look for in a weed eater

When looking to purchase a weed eater there are a few key things to keep in mind. It is always important to understand the power of the machine you are wanting to buy. Other considerations are comfort level, how the line in the trimmer advances, gas vs electric, and whether or not it has the ability to add attachments.

Gas vs Electric Weed Eaters

When purchasing a piece of lawn equipment in 2023 it’s important to understand your power source options. It basically boils down to gas or electric. Electric trimmers are typically easier to start and require little to no maintenance

. They also have less of a noise and environmental impact. Electric trimmers are usually a good bet for small jobs.

Trimmer powered by gas usually end up having more power and are more suitable for larger, more commercial type applications. Because some electric trimmers receive power by a cord they’re not super mobile, gas powered weed eaters can go where you can go. If you want to trim up the moon, it can go with you.

Gas weed eaters can usually handle thicker weed eater string sizes as well.

Cub Cadet’s New Ultima ZT1 Series Is Intense: I Found Out

The Cub Cadet Ultima ZT1 zero-turn mower is a beast. I have not been more excited to review a lawn mower than I am right now. This bad boy is not simply a lawn mower, it is a lawn experience.

Riding mowers like the Cub Cadet Ultima have developed significantly over the past decade. The days of the silly looking tractor sitting in your garage are gone. Many of the commercial mowers have been revamped for the modern household, allowing for comfortable and convenient features with the power of a commercial mower.

Let’s get started – here is what we will cover today – click a link to jump ahead:

2024 Update: As I re-read this post and update key features for 2024 – I can’t help but reflect on just how freaking luxurious this mower is.

Cub Cadet Ultima ZT1 22 HP Zero-Turn features

Let me start off by saying this zero turn mower from Cub Cadet won an innovation award from Home Depot in 2019. It is pretty sweet and I will explain more below:

Usability and comfort: the Ultima ZT1’s best feature

The details matter in a riding mower that you are going to spend three grand to take home. The Cub Cadet Ultima ZT1 has details like an anti-vibration floor mat hat helps provide a smooth ride. This zero turn mower also has a fully adjustable 18 inch seat back, adjustable arm rests, and ergonomic hand groups that allow for more comfort.

Simply put, Cub Cadet has thought through the rider’s experience when crafting this zero-turn mower.

Ultimate in comfort.

Another detail I like about this machine is the smooth tread front wheels that are crafted to not damage your lawn as you cut. The command center where all of the controls are located is slightly off to the side, allowing for maximum leg room. As a very tall person (6’ 7”), I can comfortably fit on this without having to bow my legs at a weird angle.

15! Deck height increments.

Power

The Ultima ZT1 42 inch boasts a 22 horsepower, 725 cc Kohler engine. The 50 inch version comes with a Kawasaki engine.

Either way, you get some serious power out of this mower. This bad boy can move almost 8mph forward and almost 4mph in reverse. You can move quickly through your yard and get back to enjoying football and family on your weekends.

Pretty amazing machine.

The 20 inch tires on the back provide some nice tread and traction for moving on uneven grounds and can help master rolling hills. For the normal residential owner with two to five acres of land, power is not much of a factor. Almost all zero turn mowers are going to have enough power to get the job done for a residential job.

For those in the commercial space, I would recommend a higher power mower with a bigger blade. While I do not have any concerns about durability with this mower, you will likely want something with a little more speed and horsepower to get you through the workday.

Transmission

A standard feature on the Cub Cadet Ultima is the hydrostatic transmission. As I mentioned previously, hydrostatic transmissions use fluid instead of belts to power the engine and blades. These typically require less maintenance and last much longer. This transmission type is what separates Cub Cadet from some of its peers and takes it out of the “cheaper” or “lower end” zero turn mowers.

This picture from Cub Cadet’s website highlights all the major maintenance needs and when you need them.

Criticisms of the Cub Cadet Ultima ZT1

One of the most common criticisms of this mower is that it lacks a gas gauge and an hour meter. While this mower boasts a 3.5 gallon fuel capacity that can get you through most major jobs, you are clueless as to when the gas will run out. Others love having an hour meter that can help you better understand when to change the oil.

Cub Cadet has a good reputation in the residential world. I expect most folks who use this product for up to 3 or 4 acres will not have an issue for the duration of their ownership.

The beauty of this Cub Cadet mower is that it has a three year limited warranty. If something seems fishy, make sure to have it checked out while it is still under warranty.

Overall, the Cub Cadet Ultima ZT1 mower is awesome. It is super comfortable, easy to use, and provides a great cut. The engine is high quality and the transmission is best in class. If you are using this mower for residential purposes and not mowing the side of a highway, then you should have great results.

Why we review lawn tools

The reason we started this website in the first place was because we had so much trouble trying to find reasonable, understandable, honest reviews for lawn equipment. And it’s not cheap! After hours and hours of research, trying products and returning them, and messing up our yards – we started this site.

Our testing method.

As people who had to learn the hard way, we want you to know exactly what you are signing up for before you purchase a piece of equipment. That’s why we are committed to providing honest, easy-to-understand reviews that mean something.

Riding mower vs push mower

When purchasing a riding mower, you want to make sure to consider a few things. The first thing to consider is the size of your lawn. If your lawn is less than ½ of an acre, you are likely better off with a push mower. If your lawn is above half of an acre, consider a riding mower for comfort and speed purposes.

To read our other Cub Cadet riding mower reviews, check out the my experience with the XT1 or read the latest on the XT2 or even the electric Cub Cadet.

For those with ½ acre to one acre of land, the conventional riding mower or garden tractor with a steering wheel can be great. They are relatively straightforward and intuitive to operate.

For those of us with over an acre of land and/or many obstacles in our yard, zero-turn mowers can be a life saver. Many zero turn mowers offer a reverse functionality as well, so the ability to navigate hurdles and obstacles becomes very simple.

Why would I buy a zero-turn riding mower?

If you have ever used a traditional riding mower on your lawn, you will know the frustration that comes with making sharp turns or maneuvering near a garden bed. Trying to move between trees makes me feel like Austin Powers stuck in the hallway.

This is a visual of me trying to navigate my yard without a ZT1 mower.

Zero-turn mowers work exactly how you think they would. These are the big mowers you see people using who are mowing a beautiful country event space or a huge property. The beautiful thing about them is that they are actually pretty simple to use. They are steered with two levers that help shift the machine in a circular motion without having to make forward progress (hence zero-turn).

I must admit, I was intimidated by all the knobs and gears on this mower until I gave it a try. The driving process is actually very intuitive and comfortable. Simply bring the levers together, push forward to accelerate, and shift the handles in the direction you would like to go.

This is a very authentic conversation.

What to look for in a zero-turn mower

A few things to look for in zero-turn mowers are blade size, transmission, accessory capabilities and cost. Blade size is important to keep consistent with the size of your lawn. Obviously longer blades are best for larger lawns, but begin to sacrifice a little bit of the agility afforded by a smaller blade.

Transmission is also an important consideration for a zero-turn mower. Most zero turn mowers do not have manual transmissions, but have either automatic or hydrostatic transmissions. Automatic works just like an automatic car does with a gas pedal and belts. Hydrostatic transmissions use fluid to transfer their power to the blades and the rest of the engine. I prefer and recommend hydrostatic transmissions because they typically require less maintenance and have a longer life (plus it sounds cooler).

Having nice lawn mower accessories on a riding mower is often overlooked, but absolutely necessary. There is nothing like adding on a nice hauler component to the back of your mower to move chopped wood, mulch, or plants across your property. Make sure whichever mower you purchase has a hitch that allows for accessories.

Cost is generally of the utmost importance as well. Zero-turn mowers are expensive. In fact, you can buy an old Honda Civic for less than most zero turn mowers. Expect to spend no less than $3,000 for a zero turn mower. Keep in mind that these will last a long time and save you a ton of weekend time when compared to a riding tractor or push mower. Zero turn mowers are an upfront investment, but reap a huge return over time.

John Deere X350: Does it run like a Deere?

The John Deere X350 is a riding mower offered by John Deere. When they say “Nothing Runs Like a Deere”, they mean it. These riding mowers are big, powerful, and high quality.

My first lawn tractor was a John Deere. It sat in my garage when I was a kid and I remember sitting on it and wanting to mow the lawn, even at a young age. The iconic John Deere brand is well known for longevity and reliability. In fact, I went on a hayride with my little one this past weekend and was pulled by one of the big John Deere tractors that looks like it was made in the early 60s.

Today, we will review all of the important features of the John Deere X350 – particularly the one with a 42-inch deck. While the X350 does come with an optional 48 inch deck, most folks with residential properties will stick with the 42.

Spoiler:

The John Deere X350 does run like a Deere (duh). It is an absolute beast, but is no longer being manufactured. They have since started moving their X350 series to the comparable E100 series that you can read about here and have made a lot more of their focus shifted to zero turns.

Jump ahead to:

Riding mowers vs push mowers vs zero-turn mowers

When it comes to picking the right size of mower for your yard, there are a few considerations. The first thing to consider is the size of your lawn. For those of us on several acres, a zero-turn mower is going to be the fastest way to get your lawn cut. Zero-turn mowers also offer more agility and nimble cuts if you are working around a circular or wavy structure or garden bed. John Deere also makes some great zero-turn mowers.

If you have more than a half an acre but less than 3 acres, riding mowers are a necessity. Riding mowers offer the speed and power of zero-turn mowers, but are easier to store and not too large for narrow spaces.

If you have less than a half of an acre, consider a push mower that can handle large yards. You can get self-propelled push mowers that will walk for you to help ease the burden. A riding mower and especially a zero-turn mower are going to be way too large and frankly a waste of power.

Benefits of riding mowers

As mentioned previously, riding mowers are perfect for mid-sized lawns that are too big for a push mower, but too small for a zero-turn mower. Riding mowers also can fit between two cars in your garage.

Additionally, riding mowers come in at a lower price point than zero-turn mowers and have a more intuitive steering function (the steering wheel). Another thing I love about riding mowers is their ability to pick up other functions. Some riding mowers come with a trailer hitch or front-end attachment that can allow for things like mini trailers, snow plow functions, brush guards, and more. This can help with multiple other functions around your property other than just cutting the grass.

The John Deere X350 with a 42 inch mowing deck

While I love riding mowers, the John Deere X350 offers some convenience and functionality I have not seen in others. I have reviewed a couple of other riding mowers, but have seen some new gadgets on this one that have simply blown me away. Let’s check them out below:

Control panel and ease of use

I have gone on and on about this in other reviews I have done, but remember the control panels on the old riding mowers? You had somewhere between a rabbit and a tortoise and had to crank that spring powered gear shifter and hope it landed on the right one?

Well, those days are gone. Technology has truly advanced to an intuitive experience for the mower driver. Close your eyes and imagine – an electronic fuel gauge, battery life, speed, and everything else in your car’s dashboard – on your LAWN MOWER!!!!!

Okay – now open your eyes (you had to in order to read this, but just go with me) and check out the below picture:

The visually appealing dashboard on the John Deere X350.

Pretty dang cool. Some other perks about the control panel include an easy “Mulch-on, mulch-off” button as well as a cutting height adjuster knob. I love the height adjuster because it gives you ¼ inch increments and really allows you to have total easy control over how much length you want in your grass.

Maintenance

As John Deere tends to do, the John Deere X350 has a 30 second oil change system. I did not know that was possible, but they have this neat looking tube that you just hook up to your mower and it replaces the oil.

One thing I love seeing in this mower is the K46 hydrostatic transaxle system. This allows for easier to maintain, less “breakability” movement.

Further, the John Deere X350 comes with a four year or three hundred hour bumper to bumper warranty. While I’m not in love with the transmission, anything that goes wrong in the first four years is still under warranty. That signifies the confidence that John Deere has in this series of riding mowers.

Drivability of the John Deere X350

Similar to other riding mowers, the John Deere X350 has a decent seatback and traditional foot pedal system for operating. For me, the traditional riding mowers are always more difficult to operate due to my height. Most people will find this mower comfortable and easy to use, just as any other riding mower.

Unfortunately, nothing really sets John Deere’s X350 apart from its competition in this department.

Another thing I do not love about this mower is the lack of arm rests. I absolutely need armrests when I use the riding mower and can’t stand just having my elbows dangle.

Attachments and other fun

The John Deere X350, like other riding mowers, has the functionality to add on attachments. This can turn your mower from a 4-5 month per year machine to a year around machine. The X300 series allows for snow blowers, front blades, baggers, canopy and weather enclosures, sprayers, just about every tow-behind you can dream of, and even utility carts.

The classic green and yellow of the John Deere X350.

I have seen this ability with other riding mowers, but have been blown away by the breadth of attachments that John Deere offers. It looks like John Deere has made a name for itself by trying to offer the most comprehensive suite of attachments and becoming a full year machine.

The spreader attachment is amazing.

Power

The John Deere X350 offers a 22hp V-twin engine. As you may see in competitors that offer a Kohler or Kawasaki engine, but John Deere manufactures its own engines. The engines are comparable with others and allows for up to 5.5mph of forward speed and 4mph in reverse.

Now that’s a cool shot. Cred: John Deere.

I have personally never had any issues with power as I mow on relatively flat land, but have heard from others that this machine can struggle with hills. The owner’s manual actually references not using this mower with angles greater than 15 degrees.

Mower deck

The 42 inch “Accel Deep” mower deck offered by the John Deere X350 is a great steel deck shell. This deck features a wash port for simple cleaning and electric power take-off clutch with in-line belt.

With an awesome bagging attachment.

Cost and value of the John Deere X350

Right now, the X350 is listed for $3,499 on John Deere’s website. For the price, I don’t love the value of this mower. In fact, you can get some really slick zero-turn mowers for about the same price. In all honesty, I do not think this is worth it. While John Deere mowers are great, I can’t imagine this price point for a traditional lawn tractor riding mower. That being said, inflation is definitely high and that may be having a big impact on this price. Shop around!

John Deere also sells some comparable lawn tractors at Home Depot that you can check out online.

My Experience With Dewalt’s 20V Self-Propelled Mower

The Dewalt Self-Propelled lawn mower is a 20V machine that is trying to break into the electric mower space. The electric mower space has been dominated by folks like Ryobi, Greenworks, EGO Power+ and more.

Me and my son picking it up from the store!

Traditional companies like Dewalt, Black and Decker, and others have been slower entrants (think Tesla vs. Ford) but are now dipping their toes into the water. That being said, Dewalt’s self-propelled electric mower must undergo our intense scrutiny process.

SPOILER:

This is actually a sweet mower with the longest run-time of just about any battery-powered mower. It isn’t the most popular mower on the market, but this electric mower is certainly gaining steam (or electrons).

The Dewalt 20V mower can be found at Home Depot’s website where you can buy online or pick it up in store.

Oh and if you like Dewalt’s mower, check out their newest lineup of string trimmers – from 20V to 60V.

Today we are going to talk about the following, keep reading or click the links below to jump to a specific section.

First impressions of the Dewalt self propelled lawn mower

I must admit, I have my doubts when it comes to electric lawn mowers. Other electric mowers that I have reviewed have had issues with battery life. The self propelling function of the mower can easily chew through battery and have you with a half-mowed lawn and a wasted weekend afternoon.

Interestingly, the Dewalt battery-powered outdoor line used to be 40V products. These have since been discontinued. The majority of equipment is now 20V, with a mower that requires two 20V batteries. Makes sense if you don’t think about it.

We have reviewed some of the other 20V Dewalt products, including their updated leaf blower and their powerful cordless hedge trimmer.

Dewalt is a company that is highly regarded for their tools and outdoor equipment, so I was willing to give it a go. Let’s check out some of the features of this mower.

This mower is really easy to use

Frankly, all electric lawn mowers are very usable. They are quiet, light, store easily, and do not bother your neighbors. In other words, they are boring. The Dewalt self propelled lawn mower comes with a push to start button and will begin walking for you once you get it going.

The Dewalt mower has a slight edge over other electric mowers in that it is about 5lbs lighter than its competitors. One thing I love about how easy to use this is is the push-to-start feature. This is an often overlooked feature because we are all so used to pulling the dang cord to get our mower started.

It also features a great self-propelled function that will lurch the mower forward so that you don’t have to push as hard. This is a great feature if you mow have a challenging and bumpy lawn.

The metal deck and brushless motor make this durable

One thing I appreciate about this model is the wide steel deck. Having a wide steel deck will make the mower feel less “plastic” and make the mower last much longer. A wide deck on a lawn mower also helps with a cleaner cut with less passes.

The metal deck of the Dewalt self-propelled lawn mower provides more durability than other electric mowers.

Dewalt knows this is one of the more durable electric mowers on the market and has put their money on the line by offering a three year warranty. They also offer one year of free service (which you will not need) and a ninety day money back guarantee. This basically gives you an entire free spring season to try it out. If you don’t like it, you can get your money back.

Battery life on the Dewalt self-propelled lawn mower

Battery life issues on electric mowers are what drive me CRAZY. The Dewalt electric mower has a pair of batteries that you can use to get this baby fired up. What I absolutely LOVE about this mower is the run time. The run time is 75 minutes on this mower which puts it as best in class.

Compare the 75 minutes on the Dewalt mower to 40 or 45 with the Ryobi one. This gives it a huge advantage over its competitors.

Lithium-ion batteries are great because they don’t slowly sputter and weaken your lawn mower when the battery gets low. The machine will continue to run full speed until there is nothing left in it.

Using the Dewalt battery with other Dewalt tools

Just like Ryobi and some of the other multi-electric tool companies, you can use the batteries from this mower on other Dewalt devices. This feature is of course to build brand loyalty. After all, if you already are charging Dewalt batteries in your garage, why would you want to add others?

The Dewalt 20V hedge trimmer (that I have also reviewed).

Due to Dewalt’s massive suite of products, you can use the batteries from this mower on over 200 products of Dewalt’s. The closest competitors only have maybe 40-50 tools that can also use their battery. I have personally used and tried the Dewalt 20V hedge trimmer and review it here as well as the Dewalt 60V chainsaw and the 20V blower.

If you already have the Dewalt batteries in other tools of yours, you can purchase this mower for a reduced price as a “tool-only” option. For those that are Dewalt loyals, you can rest assured that your loyalty will be rewarded.

The Dewalt line of 20V products has over 200 products that can take a 20V battery.

Where it is made

This does not matter to some people, but to me it does. This mower is made in the good ole’ United States of America. Most electric mowers are made in China and shipped over. For those that care to support an American-made product, check out this mower.

Storage

One of the beauties of electric mowers is their light weight and storage capabilities. This mower is no different. You can basically fold this mower in half and stand it up on its side. When folded, it sticks straight up and can be pushed into a tight space in your garage, crawlspace, shed, or wherever else you can make room. In the below picture that I got from Dewalt’s website, this gentleman is putting the mower in his truck. It is a great example of how the mower can be used, but sadly there is not a single blade of grass anywhere near this man (LMAO).

Where’s the grass, buddy?

The great thing about storing an electric mower is that it will fire right back up when winter is over. Gas mowers may require a little bit of oil and gas plus several yanks of the cord. This one will start back up at the press of a button.

Should I use the bag on this Dewalt mower?

I am almost never a fan of using bags on mowers. The bag will keep the grass clippings off of your lawn. While this can be aesthetically pleasing, your yard actually can benefit from these nutrients.

With electric mowers, every second of battery life counts. Keeping a bag full of damp grass to weigh down the motor and cause it to exert more energy is a loss in my opinion. Do not slow down your mow and go bag free!

To self-propel or not to self-propel?

This mower comes in two options: standard push and self-propelled. The self-propelled option is nice for those that like an easier experience when going up hills or over rough terrain like long grass. The downside of self-propelled mowers will be the battery life reduction you will experience by keeping that function on.

The push option is your standard push mower. Nothing sexy but gives you great exercise.

Cost and value of the Dewalt self-propelled lawn mower

While certainly more expensive than similar bodied gas mowers (like the Troy Bilt push I reviewed), the Dewalt comes in at the lower end of the price range.

This mower has almost all of the same features of the Greenworks mower, but about $70 less currently. This mower ranges from about $400-$450 and has better battery life. The added benefit for those that already own Dewalt tools and have other uses for these batteries makes it a clear winner.

Dewalt vs Greenworks vs Ryobi

As you may know, I have also reviewed the a similar mower from our friends at Greenworks as well as the various mowers made by Ryobi. To be frank, the Dewalt one is the only that appeals to me from an aesthetics perspective. The Greenworks and Ryobi mowers are neon-green and stick out like a sore thumb.

While the Dewalt self propelled mower is slightly more expensive, I think it is the best buy of the three. The metal deck allows for more durability despite being slightly heavier. I also like the Ryobi mower, but the compatibility with other tools is less than Dewalt. I also like Dewalt’s tools more than Ryobi, so would rather build out an entire suite of Dewalt products than Ryobi.

Greenworks is really on an island from a battery perspective, so unless you have no other Dewalt or Ryobi tools with the appropriate battery, I would ignore this one altogether.

Greenworks Electric Dethatcher Review (+ How-To Guide)

My Greenworks Dethatcher is a lawn tool that I became obsessed with the second I started using it. Dethatchers work by pulling up old, dead grass that is embedded in the soil of your lawn. This provides the most satisfying experience ever when you use it.

This dead grass, or “thatch”, prohibits your living grass from getting nutrients and can cause your grass to appear thin. Dethatchers have historically been tough-looking heavy rakes that you could pull across your lawn by hand.

Let’s get started!

When and why to use a dethatcher on your yard

Dethatching your yard is one of the most satisfying lawn tasks. If you are one of those people who likes pimple popping videos or loves to peel off the plastic of a new appliance, then dethatching will be your jam.

My Greenworks Dethatcher.

It basically pulls up all this dead grass that is stuck to your lawn and pushes it to the top of your yard. You can almost hear your yard start breathing again.

The time of year to dethatch your yard is just prior to the aerating and overseeding process. For us, this time of year is in October, but can vary depending on where you live. Dethatching right before aerating and seeding gives the best possible chance for your seeds to make contact with soil.

THIS is thatch.

First, you pull up the dead grass with the dethatcher. Once you have pulled all of this up and gotten rid of it, then you can aerate. You will want to aerate your lawn immediately after dethatching, then overseed the lawn. This will put seed straight on the open soil and give it the best success to grow into a thick, luscious lawn.

The Greenworks Dethatcher features

The Greenworks dethatcher comes in at a slightly lower price point than the Sun Joe Dethatcher. It is also one of the most popular dethatchers available on the market. Let’s review what makes this so popular.

Folding down my dethatcher after use.

Psst – check out our comparison of the Sun Joe vs Greenworks Dethatcher.

My experience using this dethatcher

I used my Greenworks dethatcher for the first time this year on my relatively newly sodded lawn in Austin, TX. Despite only having a year or two of life, I got an insane amount of thatch off the ground. Here’s how it worked.

The Greenworks Dethatcher comes with an easy push to start functionality. This push to start feature allows for guaranteed starts after being stored through a cold winter. It boasts a 14 inch width for the tines (the little spikes that pull up thatch), which gives it an immediate advantage over some of its competitors.

The handles fold in and allow for easy storage. As do other dethatcher in its class, it does not use any batteries and requires no charging. Rather, the Greenworks dethatcher requires an extension cord. As I mentioned in my last dethatcher review, a fifty foot extension cord is recommended. Longer extension cords can become quite heavy and cumbersome to move throughout your yard.

The start and stop features on my Greenworks dethatcher.

Comfort is important to me, and as a tall person I highly value the longer handles that come with the Greenworks dethatcher. These are much more comfortable and help me stay out in the yard longer.

This is surprisingly powerful

Not sure what kind of power you can expect with an electric dethatcher. This is not a gas guzzler and is not meant to really provide any power. But it does have 10A of power running through it. It does not have a self propelled feature persay, but does inch forward with the help of the thines moving forward trying to pull up grass.

When I was using this dethatcher and testing out the power, I noticed that it wasn’t an issue – the issue was moving slowly, which is basically just what I have to do when I use a dethatcher.

You can check out the cordless version of the Greenworks dethatcher.

This dethatcher is simple and durable

While most people scoff at plastic and electric lawn tools, I think this one really does have great durability. I have not put too much use into mine, but have heard others talk about the longevity of the tines. The tines are the little pieces of metal that actually pick up and displace the dead grass on the bottom of the dethatcher. You would expect some wear and tear, but they appear to last quite a while.

This is really a simple machine that does not require any maintenance. When broken down to its functional components (kind of like active ingredients in supplements), it is just an electric power circle of little spikes. Not much can go wrong.

This one was really easy for me to break down and fold in half in my garage, basically just like how it came out of the box.

My yard now looks way better after using this

My Greenworks dethatcher will pull up the dead grass from the top of my yard without fail. As long as it is moderately dry outside, it will not have a problem getting to the thatch and giving your grass some room to breathe.

Clean-up, however, is a different issue. Compared to several other electric dethatchers, the Greenworks dethatcher does not come with a bag. Do not fret! The bags that come with the dethatchers are almost comically small.

Height settings on my Greenworks dethatcher.

I was surprised with the amount of grass that came up from this tool. You will likely fill your bag after about 5 to 8 feet of pushing. With that in mind, most people use all dethatchers without bags.

To clean up, simply grab your mower, put it on a high setting, slap the bag on, and do a quick run over the yard to suck up all the thatch. You can always use a blower, a heavy duty rake, or whatever you would like to clean up the yard.

Comparison: Greenworks dethatcher vs Sun Joe dethatcher

If you are looking at an electronic dethatcher online, you are likely picking between these two. Both are the top sellers on Amazon and combined have over 20,000 reviews. Both look very similar and both have almost 5 stars on Amazon.

Luckily, I have owned both and even tested them side by side to see which one did a better job of pulling up thatch.

Functionality and power

To compare the two, let’s start with functionality. They function identically. Both are powered by an extension cord, move at the same speed, and electronically pull up thatch. The advantage goes to Greenworks here because they have a slightly bigger tine deck. 14 inches in the Greenworks vs 13 inches in the Sun Joe dethatcher. You will get more out of each pass using the Greenworks.

Add-ons

Something else to consider when comparing these products is the availability of add-on features. Greenworks offers zero add ons to their product, whereas Sun Joe offers a scarifier and a bag. As mentioned previously, the bag is meaningless and most people trash it. The scarifier applies blades to the soil to help cut through and tough thatch and provide a modest amount of aeration. The advantage in this category goes to Sun Joe.

Tines at the bottom of my Sun Joe dethatcher.

Cost and value

As of right now, the Sun Joe dethatcher costs around $150 and the Greenworks dethatcher comes in right around $130. Both are going to last a long time and both are of very similar quality. If it were me (and it is me), I am going with the Greenworks.

Overall comparison: Greenworks dethatcher vs Sun Joe dethatcher

Y’all this is a relatively easy one for me. I will save $20 and go with the Greenworks dethatcher if I had to do it over again. It operates the same, has great durability, is slightly wider, and a good bit cheaper.

Check out our web story detailing the competition between these two.

You can grab the Greenworks dethatcher on Amazon (on sale right now for 35% off) for an awesome price. You can also get the Greenworks 27022 dethatcher straight from the Greenworks website.

Ryobi Has a Nice Gas-Powered 3000 PSI Pressure Washer

The Ryobi 3000 PSI pressure washer with a HONDA engine is a rare bird. Most Ryobi products (lawn mowers, weed eaters) are battery powered and mostly work for smaller yards or lots. They have their own lawn mowers and weed eaters that use the same battery to provide some compatibility between products.

This pressure washer however, is completely different. This bad boy slaps a Honda GCV160 engine on the cute neon green Ryobi design and makes the battery lovers jealous.

Real quick, here are my honest highlights about this pressure washer:

  1. If you want a gas pressure washer, I’d probably go with Simpson Pressure Washers
  2. Ryobi has some great electric tools, so this isn’t really in their sweet spot.
  3. While this isn’t bad, it just is off-brand. I can’t NOT recommend this Ryobi pressure washer, but I think you can do better.

Let’s get started with our review. Click a link below to jump ahead and read more.

An overview of the Ryobi 3000 PSI pressure washer

Let’s take a look at the features of this pressure washer and how it stacks up to its competitors. If you’re looking for an electric alternative, we have a full list of Ryobi pressure washers you can check out.

Power on the 3000 PSI pressure washer

The Ryobi 3000 PSI pressure washer has a PSI or pounds-per-square-inch of 3000 (duh). This means that it packs a significant punch compared to its other residential peers. You will see some of the dinkier electric pressure washers pack PSIs of around 1600-2500. That is great, but it might take more time and effort on your Sunday afternoon to get the job done.

The electric version.

A high-powered pressure washer is what I recommend, even for the lighter jobs. It is always nice to have more than you need when it comes to pressure washers. Consider a situation in which you buy your pressure washer just to clean off your boat or car and some of your exterior windows.

With the Ryobi 3000 PSI pressure washer, the Honda GCV160 gas powered engine will enable you to clean things like brick, concrete, and other masonry structures. This machine boasts 2.3 gallons per minute of water forcing all the old dirt and grime off of whatever structure you are wanting to clean.

Nozzle changing

One thing I love about the Ryobi 3000 PSI pressure washer is that it comes with a 5-in-1 pressure washer nozzle. This nozzle has a zero degree, 25 degree, 40 degree, long-range soap, and short-range soap setting. Each of these is accessible by a twist of the same nozzle head.

Some Ryobi pressure washers have this nozzle holder built in.

The graphic below from Ryobi shows all of the different uses for the various nozzles. Do not get stuck with a weak pressure washer that takes up your whole day – go with power.

Helpful guide from Ryobi on their pressure washer nozzle uses.

Detergent tank

Speaking of different nozzle heads on the Ryobi 3000 PSI pressure washer, two of them include soap. There is a long-range soap option as well as a short-range soap option. Both of these are activated by the detergent tank on the pressure washer. Simply add soap to the chamber and switch the nozzle to either soap option and you are ready to go. These are great options for cleaning automobiles, boats, hard to reach windows, and more.

Soap tank allows you to step your game up!

Using this pressure washer

Other than the wide range of applicable uses that the five in one nozzle provides, a few other features make this machine very easy to use.

The Ryobi 3000 PSI pressure washer also boasts a 35 foot high pressure hose that allows for 40% longer reach than many of its peers. It also has a hand-truck design that allows you to move it around easily, supported by the 12 inch wheels on the back.

This handle also attaches to the side of the machine, allowing for easy storage without worrying about the handle getting run over in the garage.

Ryobi 3000 PSI Pressure washer comparisons

Depending on where you are buying, you may not have the Ryobi 3000 PSI pressure washer available. There may only be the 2900 (like at my local home depot) or the 3300 (also available at my local home depot), but not the 3000.

The differences between the three are subtle but important.

Another beast Ryobi pressure washer.

The 2900 does not have a Honda engine as the main workhorse. I love the dependability of the Honda motors, as they work well in every industry that uses them. One other difference in the 2900 vs the 3000 is the detergent tank. If you want to use soap with your pressure washer, make sure to scrub down the surface by hand first. To me, the two soap nozzles on this one do not really make sense without actually being able to disperse soap.

The 3300 has slightly more power than the 3000 and includes the detergent tank and the honda engine. This honda engine is slightly bigger (GCV190) and includes “Idle Down Technology”, which basically means it is quieter and gets better fuel consumption. The 3300 also includes a 50ft hose that allows double the reach of other pressure washers in the market.

All of them are backed by a three year limited warranty, which helps me rest assured as a buyer.

Either way, this has way more power than Sun Joe’s pressure washers.

Cost comparison Ryobi 3000 PSI pressure washer vs. other top-rated pressure washers

Most residential pressure washers sell anywhere from $250 to $500. If you are looking for a super powerful commercial grade pressure washer, be prepared to spend $650 to $1,000 on a machine.

The Ryobi pressure washers reviewed here range from low $300s for the 2900, mid to high $300s for the 3000, and up to the mid $400s for the 3300.

You can check out all the Ryobi pressure washers at Home Depot here.

I recommend the Ryobi 3000 PSI pressure washer with the Honda engine because it is the most bang for the buck. It has the detergent tank, the power of the Honda engine, and the reach that you will need to get the job done. The five in one nozzle head is icing on the cake and really puts this over the edge as compared to other gas powered pressure washers.

Why we review lawn tools

The reason we started this website in the first place was because we had so much trouble trying to find reasonable, understandable, honest reviews for lawn equipment. And it’s not cheap! After hours and hours of research, trying products and returning them, and messing up our yards – we started this site.

We have unusual methods.

As people who had to learn the hard way, we want you to know exactly what you are signing up for before you purchase a piece of equipment. That’s why we are committed to providing honest, easy-to-understand reviews that mean something.

What to look for in a pressure washer

When looking for a pressure washer, you want to have a good understanding of the jobs you want to get done. Most people use pressure washers to deep clean their patio, porch, driveways, windows, or other external surfaces around the house. Most pressure washers are good for these jobs as they are relatively light work and do not require excessive force.

For those of us cleaning the spray paint off of our cars from our crazy ex-girlfriends, you might want one that has a little more “umph” behind it.

Luckily for you, the Ryobi 3000 PSI pressure washer can handle both.

Things to consider before buying a pressure washer

Some common considerations for those looking for a pressure washer include the following:

  • Ability to add soap to the hose instead of schlepping around a bucket with soap
  • Multiple nozzle types for whichever job you need
  • Length of pole (if cleaning exterior of house, not having one of these could limit how high you can reach)
  • Storage capability and maintenance requirements
  • PSI level for either commercial or residential use

Why I Love The Dewalt 20V MAX Hedge Trimmer

The Dewalt Hedge Trimmer 20V DCHT820B is a cordless trimmer used for folks trying to clean up their overgrown bushes around their yard. Cordless trimmers are handy for those that like to cover a longer distance without being weighed down or restricted by a cord.

Cordless hedge trimmers are popular even for the most novice of yard groomers. This Dewalt Hedge Trimmer is one of the few trimmers I have experienced that I truly have a strong opinion on.

Here’s a quick breakdown of my experience with the Dewalt hedge trimmer. Keep scrolling if you want to read more! Follow this link to watch my video review on Youtube as well.

  • Dewalt crushed it by providing a nice rubber molded grip that makes it really easy to handle
  • The brushless motor means this was built for durability
  • This Dewalt hedge trimmer is part of the 20V MAX series with dozens of other tools
  • I used it on my backyard and loved it.

Buckle up and let me review the Dewalt hedge trimmer. Click below to jump ahead:

Dewalt has really stepped up their game and even made a sleek cordless lawn mower and some really sweet leaf blowers as well. They have a history of great gas products, too, like their huge Dewalt 3400 PSI pressure washer.

How I tested this

I borrowed this hedge trimmer from my brother-in-law for a Youtube video I recorded. It was a great time of year to put it to the test on some bushes in my backyard.

When I was using this hedge trimmer, I was testing it for a few things. Obviously power, but also handling and comfort, battery run-time and charge time, and overall value (price compared to performance).

I’ve tested a bunch of these now and this one was a big surprise.

Using this hedge trimmer is easy and comfortable

Dewalt is known for having a high quality, residential suite of products. Most folks in the construction or commercial landscaping industry are not using Dewalt, but it is one of the most popular brands for folks like you and me walking around Home Depot.

The Dewalt 20V hedge trimmer is super light!

The hedge trimmer is highly usable for residential consumers. As is any other cordless trimmer, the Dewalt is easy to pick up and take wherever you need around your yard.

Further, another aspect of this is the compatibility of the battery. The hedge trimmer comes with a 20V battery that is usable with all of its 20V products. In fact, the Dewalt lawn mower uses the same battery – talk about convenience!

Yep, that means if you own a Dewalt power drill or other battery powered device from them, you can just keep one battery charged and open up space in your garage.

Try to purchase the tool-only version

Tool only means that the hedge trimmer comes without a battery. This is super convenient for Dewalt loyalists who want to leverage their existing suite of 20V tools from Dewalt. Simply pop the battery on to the back and fire up the trimmer, just like any other Dewalt tool you own.

Comfortable grips make a difference

A positive to having a 20V battery is that this will be a relatively light weight hedge trimmer. Additionally, a lack of a cord to lug around will make this tool feel like a feather.

Great easy to use handle.

Also, I may be too accustomed to my twenty-year old corded hedge trimmer, but I sensed that this trimmer had much less vibration. Particularly when you first pull this out of the box, the lightweight feel, lack of vibration, and sharp blades make the first few cuts feel really nice.

This hedge trimmer has some serious power

This hedge trimmer boasts a 5.0Ah Lithium Ion battery. While this sounds impressive, you are only going to get so much power out of a battery-powered hedge trimmer.

The first time I ever used a hedge trimmer I pictured it being like using one of those big lumberjack chainsaws. I was disappointed to say the least when I started using one and could not cut through a ¾” inch thick branch.

Like a hot knife through hot butter.

I am not alone in thinking that this tool does not have the power that you would want or expect. Other reviews that I have read online have pointed out that the hedge trimmer can take a few passes over the same spot to truly get a good cut.

Conversely, the good news here from a low power hedge trimmer is that for most people using this tool, it will not really impact you that much. Most people are used to hedge trimmers taking a few passes because most people (me) wait too long to cut their bushes and end up having to take a million passes to get it trimmed.

For those that obsess over their circular-shaped bushes, this will leave some power to be desired.

Depth matters for cutting thick branches

Something that cracks me up about all of the measurements and data points provided by Dewalt is the trimmer depth. Basically, Dewalt measures the length of the blades and says that length is how thick of a bush it can cut. In your dreams.

Amazing trimmer depth.

Finally, if you think a hedge trimmer can cut through a three quarters of an inch branch, you have gullible written on your forehead. While this product can cut to a depth of three quarters of an inch, it will only get you through a very leafy, brushy hedge.

Cost and value

The Dewalt 20V Hedge Trimmer is selling for anywhere between $200 and $250 from what I can tell. The tool only Dewalt 20V Hedge trimmer sells for about $130 to $150.

Perfect molded grip

Comparable brands like Black and Decker, Greenworks, and Craftsman have virtually identical trimmers for about the same or LESS cost.

In my opinion, the true value of this product is not anything inherent to the product itself. Most battery powered cordless hedge trimmers are going to perform the same. Those who purchase a cordless trimmer for tasks around their relatively small to medium sized yards will be totally fine purchasing any of these.

Who should buy this?

The value of purchasing a Dewalt 20V hedge trimmer comes most to those who already own a suite of Dewalt 20V battery powered items. The tool-only version of this hedge trimmer is significantly cheaper. If you have a 20V battery for this already, you can save a good amount of money, garage space, and electricity by sticking with this brand.

Who should NOT buy this hedge trimmer?

If you have a suite of products from Ryobi, Craftsman, or any of the other brands that have compatible batteries, I do not recommend purchasing this product. Try to find a hedge trimmer with compatible batteries and similar features.

Why we started The Lawn Review

The reason we started this website in the first place was because we had so much trouble trying to find reasonable, understandable, honest reviews for lawn equipment. And it’s not cheap! After hours and hours of research, trying products and returning them, and messing up our yards – we started this site.

Corded vs Cordless hedge trimmers

Hedge trimmers come in corded and cordless fashions. Corded trimmers have been the default and most popular trimmers on the market for a long time. Trimmers that require you to keep them plugged in have a few negatives, however.

Corded hedge trimmers

I have always used a corded hedge trimmer and the most frustrating part to me is that it comes unplugged pretty easily. I find myself stepping on it, getting it caught on a branch, or tangling my arm around it. Another negative to the long cord is the limited reach provided by the cord. Even for bushes close to my house, I can reach the end of the cord pretty quickly if I am getting on a ladder to cut a tall hedge.

My classic Craftsman corded hedge trimmer doesn’t fail.

Lastly, and this one is probably irrational, but I tend to feel like I am going to get the cord caught in the trimmer and cut it off. This has never happened but it stresses me out when I am working in the yard.

Cordless hedge trimmers

Cordless hedge trimmers are definitely more functional for spending time out in the yard. My concerns about cutting off the wire, getting tangled in wire, and becoming unplugged all go out the window. You will also have a longer range for cutting than you would with a traditional corded hedge trimmer.

Not to mention, if a sibling or friends wants to borrow the Dewalt Hedge trimmer 20V, you don’t have to worry about lugging around a heavy extension cord.

This one made our list of some of our favorite cordless hedge trimmers!
