4 Powerful Ryobi Weed Eaters: Buying Guide for Any Lawn

electric weed eater held up by myself after personally using, testing, and providing my review

Ryobi Weed Eaters, also known as weed wackers or string trimmers, are some of the most popular weed eaters in the game. The best Ryobi Weed eater is the Ryobi 40V ExandIt Series (mine is pictured below) because it can handle many attachments and has a super versatile battery.

Ryobi weed eaters are sold everywhere including Home Depot and Amazon. Here’s why: almost everyone has at least ONE Ryobi product. Once you have the battery already, then you can buy the other tools without the battery for cheaper.

It’s called buying  the tool-only version. It’s how these brands sink their teeth into you for life.

Here is my ranking of the best Ryobi Weed Eaters in 2024:

4 Great Ryobi Weed Eaters

Ryobi weed eaters come in all shapes and sizes. Each yard size has multiple contenders, which is why we spent so much time pulling this list together. Our goal is to remove the confusion and serve up the best recommendation for you. Let’s start with small yards.

The Best Ryobi Weed Eater for Small Yards: The small ONE+ 18V Ryobi trimmer

Smaller yards generally require smaller tools. It’s not difficult. Fortunately, with Ryobi’s ONE+ 18V series you are going to get the perfect amount of power for the job.

And the best part is that Ryobi’s ONE+ 18V series fits a TON of other tools.

But for a small yard, a lightweight, easy-to-use tool is going to fit the bill just fine. That’s why we recommend the Ryobi ONE+ 18V Electric Cordless String Trimmer. My neighbor has one that he uses and he let me borrow it.

Lightweight, easy to use, and still plenty powerful.

It honestly looks a little dinky, but it was a powerhouse. It’s a ridiculously low price and has everything you need for small jobs. It has a nice little ergonomic handle and is easy to roll onto its side to act as a makeshift edger.

My neighbor who used it has a really steep yard and he was moving up and down the hill with relative ease, despite being older and recently having back surgery. If you have a small yard, this thing is going to be enough to handle all your basic needs. With a 10 inch cutting diameter, it can handle most grass and weeds but will struggle with thicker brush.

You can get it on Amazon, but if you already own the battery you can get a tool-only version for a bit cheaper. Now that’s a steal!

But its actually available for an even better price at Home Depot – check it here.

Best Ryobi Weed Eater for Medium Yards: The Ryobi 18V Trimmer

What is a medium sized yard anyways? I consider anything between around 5,000 square feet to a half-acre medium sized.

Lawns like these still don’t require commercial-grade weed eaters, but they do need something with a little more power than you’ll get from the string trimmer above.

That’s where the ONE+ series 18V battery provides its highest-tier weed eater. The big brother to the string trimmer above. It has a similar name, but looks completely different and has a cutting swath that is three inches wider. Comparing the 18V and 40V Ryobi weed eater is tough, but this one is sweet.

This thing is a big deal – I love the long shaft (stop).

I love this one because it comes with a longer lasting battery than the one above. It has a 4.0 Ah battery whereas the smaller version is only 1.3 Ah. Basically they have the same strength but this one lasts longer. It also has an edge on cutting ability because of the larger cutting swath (more velocity on the edge of the trimmer).

The other thing I like about this 18V Ryobi string trimmer is that it has a straight shaft. Many weed eaters out there have a curved shaft, which is nice for clearing out small plots of grass but SUCKS when it comes to doing any type of edging work.

At just over 11 lbs, it is really easy to work with and handle. It was designed for medium-sized yards, which is where most Americans are going to fall. Lastly, I absolutely adore that this one has a brushless motor, which means it is going to have more torque and be much more durable.

This one is available at Home Depot for a great price as well.

Best Ryobi Weed Eater for Large Yards: Ryobi 40V ExpandIt series weed eater

I have a love-hate relationship with this one, because it was my first string trimmer. It was also my first edger and leaf blower. More on that later.

But for large yards, I recommend stepping up to Ryobi’s 40V series. Their 40V Cordless Expand-It series weed wacker is the way to go for large yards and here’s why:

  • 15 inch cutting swath
  • Bump-feed string trimmer
  • Variable speed control (not just 1 or 2 speed options)
  • Operates just as well as some gas string trimmers if you take the guard off

Not sure if I can come out and say this, but two weeks ago I took the guard off of this weed eater and my mind was blown. I can’t believe I’ve been using it for 4 years with the guard.

Looking good!

And what you may have missed there is that I’ve been using this weed eater for 4 years. It has held up amazingly that whole time just with a few string replacements.

Take that guard off! You just need a wrench.

The string trimmer attachment on this attachment-capable kit is the absolute all-star. And having the 40V batteries will save you big money on this one if you already own them. If not, getting them with this weed eater will allow you to save hundreds of dollars on their lawn mowers, snow blowers, and leaf blowers if you want to grab those as well.

The whole thang.

I’m 6 ft 7 in, so cranking my back with a weed eater is really easy. This one has never given me too much trouble because I can pop off the attachment and re-insert it at a different angle. This allows me to hold whatever grip is most comfortable with me and continue to use it for whatever type of job I’m doing.

I got mine at Home Depot and still use it to this day – you can check the price now at Home Depot here.

Best Attachments for Ryobi Expand-It String Trimmer

Take it from me, I learned this lesson the hard way. If you are going to go with the Ryobi ExpandIt series weed eater, then you may as well add on some inexpensive attachments.

Here’s what I recommend:

  • The ExpandIt Edger attachment:
    • The edger attachment is an absolute beast. I’ve had it for 4 years and haven’t had to replace the blade. It has consistently given me the best looking lawn in the neighborhood by creating deep borders around my yard.
  • The ExpandIt Brush Cutter attachment:
    • I love this because we have some kudzu growing behind our yard. It is a perpetual war to keep it at bay and out of my grass and off of my trees. The brush cutter once or twice a year keeps it from ever getting out of control and crossing the line. It’s basically like the flamethrower guys from Stranger Things.
  • The Expand-It Pole Saw attachment
    • Pole saws are kind of an insane tool. You strap a chainsaw to the end of a big stick and hope for the best. So basically they are every man’s dream. The attachment takes a while to put together, but when you get it all figured out it is super fun to use.
Me using the brush cutter attachment.

What I don’t recommend:

  • The Expand-It blower attachment:
    • I burned through three of these in the first year. For whatever reason, the little driveshaft that spins the blower keeps getting stripped inside the blower. No idea what’s happening. Luckily, I haven’t seen these for sale online in a while, so Ryobi may have completely pulled them.

They aren’t all the same, but they should be similar.

Final review: Best Ryobi Weed Eaters

Folks, you really can’t go wrong with a Ryobi weed eater as long as you are matching the size and strength of the tool to your lawn.

Smaller lawns are okay with smaller weed wackers. Larger yards are going to require a big, higher voltage weed eater with a large cutting swath.

About Ryobi tools

Ryobi is one of the OGs of the battery-powered lawn tool world. They have EVERYTHING. Stuff you had no idea was even a real tool or could be battery powered. Some of our favorite Ryobi products include (links to full reviews we have done):

Ryobi has both a 40V and an 18V series battery that you can use. The 18V series is often called their ONE+ series, which generally fits lighter-duty products of theirs as it is a lower voltage. Their 40V series fits more of their heavy-duty stuff like mowers. Ryobi has different configurations of weed wackers that can accommodate both their ONE+ and 40V series.

They have this distinction because weed eaters are one of those tools that can go either way. Some are lighter duty and some are used for really big yards. More to come on that.

Why would I buy a battery-powered weed eater?

There are a few reasons to check out an electric weed eater when picking out your next lawn and garden tool kit. As compared to gas-powered weed eaters, electric weed eaters tend to be easier to use and maintain. At the end of a long winter season, you may have to refuel your gas powered weed eater and crank it a few times before you can get it to start. With the Ryobi 40V weed eater and other electric weed eaters, you simply place the battery and you are ready to go.

Another benefit to electric trimmers is maintenance. You will not have to do anything to maintain an electric trimmer other than change out the line. No oil change, no filter change, and no messy gasoline spills.

If you are a Ryobi loyalist and have one of their mowers, then you can actually use this same 40 volt battery in both the mower and the trimmer. More on that later.

You also want to make sure you have a nice weed eater string with the best size, color, and shape.

4 Timeless Toro Lawn Mowers That Will Last Years

The best all-around Toro Mower is the classic Toro Recycler, followed by the Toro TimeCutter for zero-turn enthusiasts. Toro lawn mowers are the absolute classics of the lawn care world. The Tom Brady of lawn mowers. The classic muscle car, ‘69 Corvette of lawn mowers.

Why?

Go on a little drive this Sunday afternoon and tell me what you see. If you go through any neighborhood I guarantee you will see at least a few of these either being pushed around or stored in people’s garages.

So let’s get started. Click a link below to take you right to the section you are looking for:

The 4 Best Toro Mowers

Toro has historically been the market leader in lawn mowers. They’re well known to everyone, but have struggled to keep up with the changing landscape and the young brands (this is where my Tom Brady comparison comes in).

But before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s highlight the amazing, well-known mowers they do have.

The Best Toro Zero-Turn Mower: Toro TimeCutter SS4225

The Toro TimeCutter SS4225 is a zero-turn mower with a reputation for being top of the line. In fact, these are super popular among residential homeowners, but also with commercial landscapers. You RARELY see those two overlap as they are looking for different applications, but the TimeCutter SS4225 appeals to both.

Why?

Well not only does it have the comfort and affordability that attracts homeowners, but it also has the durability and power that landscapers are looking for. Sounds too good to be true? It isn’t.

My son trying out the Toro TimeCutter.

The Toro TimeCutter SS4225 boasts a 22.5 HP V-twin Toro engine (I think that is where the 225 in the name comes from) in addition to a 42 inch cutting deck (where the 42 comes from in the name). This is serious power. For comparison’s sake, a number of riding mowers come in at 16-18 horsepower. This is a huge step up. Even the Cub Cadet ZT1, a hot competitor, comes in at only 22hp.

The SS in SS4225 stands for SmartSpeed, which means that it allows you to slow down when making tight maneuvers so that you can make sharp, smooth cuts around garden beds.

The nice new deck on the 2024 Toro TimeCutter.

Guys, I can’t highlight enough how well this zero-turn mower was engineered. There’s a reason it is one of the most popular zero-turn mowers on planet Earth.

Quick summary of what I love about the TimeCutter:

  • Extremely comfortable
  • High horsepower, well-made engine
  • Hydrostatic transmission
  • Durability
  • Deck washout system + cup-holders

The Toro TimeCutter can actually be bought online from Home Depot – check the price and make up your mind!

Best Toro Mower for Medium-Sized Yards: Toro TimeMaster 30

If you ask anybody who has worked for a landscaping company what the best push mower is, the TimeMaster 30 is going to be on their list.

The Toro TimeMaster 30 is a beast. It may be one of the higher end push mowers on the market, costing over $1,000 (thanks Biden!) but it is totally worth it.

The TimeMaster 30 has TWO blades on it across a 30 inch cutting deck! That size of a cutting deck on a push mower is competing with the cutting decks on riding lawn mowers and lawn tractors. Y’all….

Yeah…that’s a PUSH mower.

But the TimeMaster has a ton of bells and whistles as well. You can tell a true lawn pro designed this one. For example, it has a feature where if you let off the gas, the engine will keep running. Sounds small, but in reality it’s extremely helpful.  There’s nothing worse than mowing a lawn, having to stop to move a stick or rock, then going back to your mower to pull the cord until it starts again. That’s exact situation is what you avoid by using the TimeMaster 30.

Also can we revisit how massive the deck is on this? Most push mowers are between 18 and 24 inches. 30 inches allows you to get an extra FOOT on each pass. Those things add up over the course of a mow and will save you some serious time.

This thing is huge.

Lastly, Toro has made maintenance a breeze on this mower. It has a strict “no oil change” policy. Instead of changing out the oil, you just add more. I actually have no clue how this works other than burning oil off, but I’m not here to ask questions. I am here to have the best mowing experience of my life.

I also love the deck washout system, which is also found on the TimeCutter above. You can connect your hose to the deck of the mower and it is designed internally to funnel the water in such a way that it cleans out the entirety of the deck.

It’s the details for me!

Quick summary of what I love about the TimeMaster 30:

  • Massive cutting deck
  • SmartStop function
  • Self-propelled
  • TWO blades

The TimeMaster is for sale exclusively at Home Depot and it’s price often changes – check it here.

Best Toro Mower for Small Yards: Toro Recycler

The Toro Recycler is your all-American lawn mower. This is the mower you see in everyone’s garage or shed with the classic “TORO” print on the collection bag on the sides. If you’ve seen it (which you definitely have), then you know what I’m talking about. Sadly, the newer versions don’t have that. BUT that’s a good sign because the old ones clearly last FOREVER.

IYKYK!

At 22 inches, the Toro Recycler is THE perfect width for lawns on the smaller side. I’m not talking townhouse mower small, but probably up to ½ acre or so, which is what most of us have here in America.

The Toro Recycler has all the well-engineered parts that make the TimeMaster so incredible. It has the personal pace self-propelled function, the no oil change philosophy, a deck washout, and a well-made engine.

It even has a really cool feature that is front-wheel drive for the self-propelled function. This function is wonderful if you have to mow over steep banks or hills. Instead of the rear wheels having the self-propelled motor, which results in spinning and getting stuck, the front wheels have it. This makes it so the mower creeps over any inconsistencies in the lawn and is particularly useful for hills. It helps pull the mower forward instead of pushing from behind.

Just an absolute classic.

The other unheard of bell and whistle that comes with this mower is their vortex technology. I’ve never seen this on any other push mower. Basically, the mower has this airflow opening that flows air from the ground up through the blades, causing the grass to stand up. It’s like using Electric Shave or whatever that makes your hair stand up before you shave. What in tarnation?

The Toro Recycler comes in two varieties, one with the front-wheel drive (called high-wheel drive) and a classic rear-wheel drive. Both are for sale at Home Depot.

Quick summary of what I love about  the Toro Recycler:

  • Great size for the average yard
  • Nice FWD self-propelled function
  • Vortex technology that lifts the grass before a cut

Best Battery-Powered Toro Mower: Toro Recycler SmartStow 60V

It flies under the radar completely, but the Toro Recycler SmartStow 60V mower is one of the best battery powered mowers ANYWHERE.

Yeah, we have all heard of EGO, Greenworks, Ryobi, and all the other battery powered brands. But the Toro 60V should be right at the top of that list as well.

Here’s why: it basically has all the same features as its gas counterpart. Yes, that means an incredible steel deck, the vortex airflow thing, front wheel drive self-propelled functionality, and the ability to fold in half like a lawn chair for easy storage.

Photo cred: Toro. I mean you can’t beat that pic.

Honestly, I can’t imagine what else I would add to this mower to make it any better. The only drawback when compared to some of the big name battery brands is that the Toro battery line is generally underdeveloped. Brands like EGO have hundreds of tools built around a single battery line, making it easier to get more of those tools and use the same battery.

But as a standalone piece of equipment, Toro absolutely knocked it out of the park. I actually like that they don’t have 1,000 different mowers like Ryobi does. They go with the one shot, one  kill method. Milwaukee has a mower that is built the same way.

Milwaukee’s mower. Just built different.

This one is definitely expensive, though. The main downside is that it is over $700. This is high for most battery powered mowers, but actually pretty reasonable when compared to some of the higher-tiered gas mowers.

All around a good buy. They sell it at Home Depot for a great price.

Final words: Toro mowers legacy

Toro mowers are world-class. You can’t go wrong with really any of their mowers and I’ve yet to see a decline in quality.

Like I mentioned earlier, I guarantee your grandpa had a Toro mower sitting in his garage that could crank up in one pull even after 15 years. These things last.

Why we review lawn tools

The reason we started this website in the first place was because we had so much trouble trying to find reasonable, understandable, honest reviews for lawn equipment. And it’s not cheap! After hours and hours of research, trying products and returning them, and messing up our yards – we started this site.

Our testing methods are extreme.

As people who had to learn the hard way, we want you to know exactly what you are signing up for before you purchase a piece of equipment. That’s why we are committed to providing honest, easy-to-understand reviews that mean something.

Toro lawn tools

Toro is a well known company that serves lawn equipment for homeowners. Toro also is one of the preferred products for golf courses, sports fields, and agriculture. They clearly know what they are doing.

I’ve reviewed other Toro equipment, like their recycler push mower. One thing that stood out to me in that review is their engineering. I truly believe they have quality equipment and there’s a few ways to tell. The first is how heavy and solid their equipment is. Their quality stands out to me as top tier.

Unmistakable brand.

Another thing I noticed when reviewing the recycler mower is the attention to details. The mower just grinds and grinds and grinds until it produces a fine consistency that feeds your lawn. Other mower manufacturers do not put considerations like this into their products. They even have a patent for the fine grass clippings that nourish your yard.

Things I look for in mowers

Knowing what to look for in a mower varies on the type of mower.

  • Zero-turn mowers: For zero-turn mowers, I am looking for comfort. If you have a zero-turn mower it is because you have a big job in front of you. You’re going to be sitting in this thing and steering it precisely for a while. There’s nothing worse than being uncomfortable. I also look for things like a hydrostatic transmission to allow for longer transmission life. Lastly, I want durability – reinforced casters and a deck that won’t crack under pressure.
  • Push mowers: Push mowers have less to worry about as they are a much less costly investment. Still, push mowers can come with some great bells and whistles that make them way better to use. One of these is a self-propelled function, which I love on gas-powered mowers. Deck width is also important – if you have a medium-sized yard, then a wider deck is better. For smaller yards, a narrower deck. Otherwise, easy height adjustments, deck cleaning ports, and easy-start engines are must-haves.
  • Battery mowers: Battery powered mowers have a lot more room for error. For one, you have a super finite battery life that will take you out of the game if you kill too much battery. Gas mowers at least refill easily and then let you get on your merry way. But with battery mowers, you will see many made with a plastic deck. Avoid these unless they are super duper thick. I also generally avoid self-propelled functions on these because they crush the battery life. Lastly, you NEED to buy one with a brushless motor.

5 Convenient Electric Backpack Sprayers For Home Use

The best battery backpack sprayer is the Ryobi 40V Backpack sprayer because it is inexpensive, easy to use, and leverages the 40V battery that can be used across hundreds of their tools.

Long gone are the days of walking around cranking the pump lever all over your yard. Or even worse, the little sprayers that you carry and set down and repeatedly pump then get maybe 1-2 seconds of spray. The new battery powered backpack sprayers keep a consistent amount of pressure inside and make your life way easier. I think the first time I used a backpack sprayer I was caught off guard with how quickly I was able to complete the job.

Here are the best battery backpack sprayers this year:

  1. Ryobi 40V Cordless Backpack Sprayer
  2. Ryobi ONE+ Cordless Backpack Sprayer
  3. Milwaukee M18 FUEL Backpack Sprayer (4 Gallon)
  4. Spraymate Lil Squirt Sprayer
  5. Dewalt Battery Powered Chemical Sprayer

5 Best Battery-Powered Backpack Sprayers: Ranked

Okay! Finally after careful consideration we have put this list together. We’ve gotten our hands on a few of these but also tried to get some more variety in new products. So let’s get to the bottom of it once and for all.

5. Dewalt 20V Battery Powered Backpack Sprayer

The Dewalt Lithium-Ion Battery-Powered Backpack Sprayer is sure to be a rugged, long-lasting tool. Not only does it come with Dewalt’s trusted brand reputation, but it’s a part of their 20V battery series.

Dewalt’s 20V Battery series is compatible with TONS of Dewalt tools.

Trust the brand – but can’t see inside!

What I love about the Dewalt Battery-Powered Backpack Sprayer

  • Part of the 20V battery series
  • Padded straps with two wrap-around straps
  • 10 different flow settings
  • Several nozzles for different spray patterns

What I don’t love about the Dewalt backpack sprayer

This breaks rule number one! It doesn’t have a see-through tank. So you have NO idea how much fluid is left in there outside of the weight differential.

Comfortable. Check.

The other thing I don’t love about this backpack sprayer is the price! It comes in at a steep $300 and can be purchased online from Home Depot.

4. Spraymate Lil Squirt Portable Backpack Sprayer

Candidly, we have not used this little guy but thought it was so cool that it needed to make this list.

It isn’t really a backpack sprayer, but more like a satchel sprayer. It comes with a nice little strap that you can hang over your shoulder and waltz around your lawn to get the job done.

Cheap and it works!

At just about $100, this thing is the most cost-effective way to get the job done with a battery powered sprayer.

So where is the battery?

The batteries are INSIDE the handle.

Great question. Looking at this, you would have no idea. But it is actually built into the handle of the Lil Squirt sprayer. It plugs into the wall and has a nice little charger that you plug in directly. It makes the product super intuitive and easy to use without having to pull out a separate battery.

Otherwise, this sprayer has a nice six foot hose, a quick-connect extension wand, and is super  lightweight.

If you are a more casual backpack sprayer user, then this is a really good cost-effective alternative to the others here.

You can grab this one at Home Depot or get its big brother, a fully built out backpack sprayer with four gallons on Amazon.

3. Milwaukee M18 4 Gallon Backpack Sprayer

Milwaukee rocks. In fact, we’ve gotten our hands on a few of their pieces of lawn equipment. Like their new blowers and even their M18 lawn mower

They simply don’t miss.

So when I saw their backpack sprayer I knew it would make the top five.

What we love about the Milwaukee M18 Backpack Sprayer

  • The M18 battery line is incredible and can service TONS of tools
  • It can absolutely LAUNCH spray – like over 20 feet away if you desire
  • The shoulder straps are supremely comfortable
  • The battery placement is well-designed
Very comfy.

What we didn’t love

  • We didn’t have this problem, but from others have heard that the tank can leak
  • It’s a bit pricey.
Now that is pretty cool!

All in all this is a great backpack sprayer and perfect for those of us that already own M18 batteries, this thing is sweet. If you already own the batteries you can save a ton of money by purchasing the tool-only version on Amazon or getting it off of Home Depot, wherever you prefer.

2. Ryobi ONE+ 18V Cordless Backpack Sprayer

The Ryobi ONE+ 18V Cordless backpack sprayer is pretty slick. We loved using it and even filmed a long YouTube video that highlights all the different features and benefits.

Very nice!

It is a huge timesaver, just like the other battery-powered backpack sprayers, but is also really reliable. Ryobi products are super common as well, so chances are you already have one of their ONE+ 18V batteries to pop right onto this backpack sprayer.

Very nice!

What we love about the Ryobi 18V backpack sprayer

  • Super easy, ergonomically designed trigger that fits your whole hand
  • Battery interchangeability with all the other Ryobi 18V tools
  • You can use the tank 11 times on the same charge
  • Incredibly comfortable – way better than my Jansport backpack
  • Easy to use pressure control valve on the side
  • See-through 4 gallon tank so you know when you’re getting  low
Extremely easy to use.

Frankly, there wasn’t much to dislike about this backpack sprayer. It comes in at a great price WITH battery and charger on Amazon or at Home Depot for a great price.

1. RYOBI 40V Cordless Backpack Sprayer

Okay guys, we have a confession. This one is basically IDENTICAL to the 18V ONE+ battery backpack sprayer above. And we like it for all the same reasons.

But the 40V series from Ryobi is just much more popular than the 18V series. If you already own a Ryobi tool, you can get this thing for an insane price from a number of places. We found  the best price for the tool-only version on Home Depot’s site and it’s even cheaper than the 18V series.

Why we review lawn tools

The reason we started this website in the first place was because we had so much trouble trying to find reasonable, understandable, honest reviews for lawn equipment. And it’s not cheap! After hours and hours of research, trying products and returning them, and messing up our yards – we started this site.

We take tool testing seriously.

As people who had to learn the hard way, we want you to know exactly what you are signing up for before you purchase a piece of equipment. That’s why we are committed to providing honest, easy-to-understand reviews that mean something.

What to look for in a battery powered backpack sprayer

Again, these aren’t all made the same. With one of these backpack sprayers, you want to make sure to have the below features.

  • Comfort
    • It sounds silly, but if you are going to be personally hauling a bunch of chemicals on your back, you’ve got to make sure it is comfortable. Honestly, with how easy these things are to use, the main differentiator is what the experience feels like. Look for padded shoulder straps and an otherwise lightweight tool.
  • Battery run-time
    • There’s not really a point to a battery-powered sprayer if the battery dies and you can’t finish the job. Regardless of how long your job takes, you want to make sure to get one with a decent battery life. That helps you if you take the battery off and use it on another tool.
  • A see-through tank
    • This one sounds even sillier, but some of these battery-powered backpack sprayers have dark tanks. You can’t see how much fluid is in it. Not a huge deal but also a minor inconvenience that is so easy to avoid. Grab  one where you can see the fluid.

Those are the main things I look for. Of course there are other important things like different nozzles and a strainer to make sure you don’t get a clogged line, but those should come standard.

7 Battery Powered String Trimmers That Can Take On Gas

electric weed eater held up by myself after personally using, testing, and providing my review

My favorite battery powered string trimmer is the Greenworks 80V 16″ weed eater because it has a brushless motor, super wide cutting swath, and is part of a great battery system.

My EGO is great!

Luckily, we’ve gotten our hands on and tested dozens of weed eaters in our lives.

But before we move forward, there’s one super simple thing we want to clarify.

Weed eaters, weed wackers, string trimmers – they’re all the same thing. Believe it or not, people ask us the difference between the three all the time!

Top Battery Powered String Trimmers: By Category

As we mentioned before, the most gas-like electric weed eater for you may not be the best for me. So we will provide the best from each category to help you really narrow it down. Luckily, the best weed eaters all have the above things in common – so keep those as your North Star.

Best battery powered weed eater for large yards

When it comes to large yards, you need a weed eater that not only has a wide cutting swath, but serious battery power. Basically you want to be able to cut thick grass without the battery running out.

One of the best battery-powered weed eaters that my neighbor owns is the Pro 80V 16 inch string trimmer from Greenworks.

This is mine and it is the one I tested for this article.

I recommend NOT using the stock weed eater string that comes with it. We developed the world’s best weed eater string by testing dozens of different strings and taking the best elements of each. We created a green, .095″, triangle shaped weed eater string that is extremely powerful, visible, and durable.

Basically it’s the dream weed eater. It has a HUGE cutting swatch at 16 inches. For reference, the ones for smaller yards are like 10 inches. To put it into perspective, this is almost a foot and a half of cutting power. Not only does this make it good for weed eating, but it also has the ability to do some nice deep edging work if you forgot your edger.

Why we like the Greenworks 80V Pro 16 inch weed eater

Better question is what is there not to like? Check out a few data points here:

  • Brushless motor (more durable, run cooler, quieter)
  • The motor and handle are attachment capable for other Greenworks 80V tools
  • Straight, long shaft (please no jokes)
  • A great four year warrants on the tool itself AND the battery

Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding! This is the best weed wacker for large yards and probably a bunch of others, too.

We love the durability of this one.

You can grab it from Greenworks’ website directly or on Amazon for a massive discount.

Best battery powered weed eater and edger combo

When it comes to cleaning up your yard and you want to go the extra mile, you have to have an edger. Sure, weed eaters with big cutting swaths can do some light edging, but nothing is going to actually give you the crispiest borders like an edger will.

That’s why it’s great to get a weed eater that allows you to change out attachments. A ton of folks have this now. In fact, we wrote a whole long form post about the best battery powered weed eater and edger kits and we had a clear winner.

The EGO Power+ MHC1502 Multi Combo Kit: 15 String Trimmer, 8-Inch Edger & Power Head.

Yeah, it has a long name and a steeper price tag, but is WORTH IT.

That edger is actually pretty slick!

Here’s why we loved the EGO Power+ MHC1502 trimmer and edger

  • It isn’t a two-in-one, it is really a 8-in-1 – this thing has so many other attachments that it can do just about everything except mow.
  • EGO uses just one battery class – the 56V. Once you have that, you can buy any of their other tools’ “tool-only” version – which means batteryless. That amounts to YUGE savings.
  • Brushless, straight, yada-yada-yada you know my shpiel by now. This checks all the boxes.
We love the edger attachment.

This edger and trimmer combo is sweet. If you are going to get one and ESPECIALLY if you already have an EGO battery, then this is the one for you.

You can from Amazon, which lets you pick from a bunch of different options..

Best battery powered commercial weed eater

This is actually a hard one. There aren’t many full-on commercial battery-powered string trimmers because a lot of professionals still use gas.

That being said, there are definitely some battery weed eaters with enough power to keep up with the commercial ones.

It just looks professional

Our favorite here is a brand you probably recognize. Makita. We love Makita and have written extensively about Makita mowers, Makita blowers, and more.

Here’s what we love about the Makita XRU15PT1 36V string trimmer

Okay this weed eater is a tank. It comes with four batteries, but uses two at a time. If you have existing 18V Makita batteries, then you can save money on batteries, or store up a lot and only have to charge after like 20 lawns.

It is a killer.

We like this one because it almost directly mimics some of the gas powered string trimmers like  Echo’s SRM 225. It’s loved by us for the following reasons:

  • Super long straight shaft (over 6ft. long)
  • Minimal guard, which is great for visibility but make sure you wear eye protection
  • 15 inch cutting swath and massive RPMs of 6,500 (really fast)
  • Brushless motor

Basically you want the most powerful weed eater you can get that still has the performance of a commercial one. The Makita XRU15PT1 36V absolutely has it.

This one we grabbed online at Home Depot and picked up in store for a great price.

Best battery powered weed eater with attachments

Why buy a weed eater alone? Just about every big brand is making a power-head or multi-tool or some other name for a nice handheld motor with attachments.

We started out with the Ryobi multi-tool, but I legitimately burned through two of the blowers in a six month period. So I sent it straight to the trash.

I picked up one of the EGO Power Heads and have never looked back. To date, we own the string trimmer, the edger, and the snow blower attachment.

Our own footage of the edger attachment.

Why we like the EGO Power+ Power Head

First of all, you’re here for weed eaters, so if you are interested in the weed eater, you can grab the MHC1502 battery powered weed eater we mentioned above. It has a huge cutting swath, brushless motor, and all the bells and whistles.

But boy do we love the attachments:

  • Pole saw
  • Edger
  • Hedge trimmer
  • Blower
  • Snow shovel
  • Bristle brush
  • Cultivator/Tiller
  • Rubber broom

It’s pretty crazy how many attachments can fit on a single head of the dang EGO Power+ Power Head. If you’re in the market for a heavy-duty, attachment capable battery powered weed eater – this is your go-to.

Look at all the dirt it kicks up!

You can grab it at Lowe’s, Ace Hardware, or on Amazon. If you’re grabbing it online, I recommend Amazon. If you want to put hands on it, then I suggest stopping by Lowe’s or Ace to get your paws on it.

Stihl’s battery powered weed eaters

Stihl has a reputation for creating some of the best gas-powered equipment on the planet. They lead the chainsaw market with their Stihl MS 251 C chainsaw and also their gas powered string  trimmer, the Stihl FS 56 RC weed eater.

The FS 56 RC is undefeated in gas trimmers.

Stihl recently launched a big line of battery powered weed eaters, chainsaws, and leaf blowers.

To our surprise, we weren’t thrilled with their features or performance.

Why we don’t love Stihl’s new battery powered series

Despite Stihl’s stellar reputation in the gas space, we were saddened by some of their new battery products. For the weed eaters specifically, here is what we didn’t love:

  • No brushless motor – how could they do this? They are market leaders! It’s truly pretty sad.
  • Generally small cutting swath
  • Expensive

I think they are trying to go for a more residential audience as compared to their commercial gas trimmers, but man were we disappointed. Our favorite Stihl battery powered weed eater was the FSA 90 R – probably the closest equivalent to the gas FS 56 RC.

The Stihl FSA 90 R has great specifications and features, but no brushless motor. It is the most “tolerable” of the group. We wrote a full review of the Stihl FSA 90 R here if you are interested in learning more.

This one is not THAT bad

Stihl has a contract with Ace Hardware as the primary place to pick these up.

Cheapest battery powered weed eater

Oh boy – balling on a budget. Cheap battery powered weed eaters are great if you have a smaller yard, a townhome, or a thin wallet.

Honestly, some of them are REALLY convenient. For example, we have ranked a ton of the Black and Decker string trimmers as well as the Worx weed eaters.

Both of these are budget friendly, but also small, lightweight, and extremely easy to use.

Best budget battery powered weed eaters

Our favorite budget battery powered weed eater has got to be the Black and Decker 20V Max string trimmer.

It is definitely on the smaller side, with a 12-inch cutting swath, but not as small as some of the others.

Nice!

My favorite part about this trimmer is that the 20V battery on it can also be used on your power drill and a ton of other Black and Decker products. My parents have the 20V power drill, so they got this one for a steal and saved on the battery price.

It also has this little wheel on top that allows you to do some light edging in a straight line. V cool!

You can grab it on Amazon for an unbelievably low price

Best battery powered weed eater for a woman

Sexist! Women can use all weed eaters just as well as a man! And probably better!

Okay – we know that so cool your jets. But we do get this question a lot and it has nothing to do with ability. It isn’t about being a woman, but many women reach out asking for trimmers that are super easy to use, lightweight, and storable. Also minimal maintenance and easy trimmer line replacement.

So we have helped find what they are looking for and always come to the same conclusion. The Worx GT Revolution 3.0.

Why we love the Worx GT Revolution for women

Coming in at just over five pounds, this weed eater is extremely lightweight and easy to maneuver. It breaks down (see pic below) for easy storage and even has a telescoping shaft. So if you are looking for the most flexible and intuitive lawn tool on the planet – this has got to be it.

Foldable!

It has a decent 12 inch cutting swath, is compatible with Worx 20V and 40V batteries, and has a really easy to replace trimmer line.

My single mother neighbor down the street uses this in her lawn and had amazing things to say about it. Oh, and her yard looks incredible.

This one is available on Amazon – including battery and charger.

Final thoughts on battery powered weed whackers

Folks, as we mentioned at the beginning of this article – weed eaters are highly variable depending on what you’re looking for. We hope this has been an insightful article. If you have any more questions or would like to join our mailing list – feel free to check out our contact page.

Why we started The Lawn Review

The reason we started this website in the first place was because we had so much trouble trying to find reasonable, understandable, honest reviews for lawn equipment. And it’s not cheap! After hours and hours of research, trying products and returning them, and messing up our yards – we started this site.

We take tool testing seriously.

As people who had to learn the hard way, we want you to know exactly what you are signing up for before you purchase a piece of equipment. That’s why we are committed to providing honest, easy-to-understand reviews that mean something.

What to look for in a battery powered weed whacker

Cordless weed eaters come in all shapes and sizes. They aren’t highly complicated pieces of equipment, but they do have a few nuances. Here is how I see it:

  • Feel – Obviously this is subjective, but feel is everything to me. I have had weed eaters in the past where the handle is off to the side, making me torque my shoulders and back. If you can, get as many adjustable pieces as possible to make this customizable. It doesn’t seem like you use a weed eater for a long time, but the work is precision work that requires a steady hand and focus.
  • Motor – brushless motors are king here. They are longer lasting and more durable. Regular brushed motors are fine, too. The key difference here is that brushless motors use magnets, instead of friction, to power the motor. This means less heat, more durability, and a longer life. Brushed motors will still do the job, however they tend to have a shorter life. Brushless motors are relatively new, so if you have had an electric tool back in the day, it was probably brushed.
  • Interchangeable batteries – Get a dang tool that has batteries that you can use with other batteries. C’mon people – save money by doing this! You don’t have to keep buying new battery sets. There are a lot of tool companies that have batteries that work with a ton of different tools. But some of these companies have a bunch of different battery types. Be careful!
  • Curved vs Straight shaft – I always, always, always prefer straight shafts. They are so much easier to use and control and are much longer than curved shafts. Curved shafts are good for clearing out a small piece of land unable to be mowed. But if you want to actually do some good trimming and edging, a straight shaft is much better. Curved shafts are difficult to maneuver and to create a straight line for edging.

3 Strong Milwaukee 18V Leaf Blowers

My favorite Milwaukee leaf blower is the Milwaukee M18 FUEL leaf blower because it is great for every day use including around the shop, backyard, and even for drying your car.

But they’ve got three real options here and you can’t really go wrong with either. And we were lucky enough to get our hands on them for a nice side-by-side trial.

We were blown away (ha,ha).

So let’s check them out together.

SPOILER: Our favorite was the M18 Milwaukee 2724-20 Leaf Blower

You can grab it online from Home Depot or on Amazon by following those links.

The 3 Strongest Milwaukee Leaf Blowers

Milwaukee is known for their amazing quality but they are also known for having a limited selection. One shot, one kill, right? A good example of this is their M18 lawn mower. It is the only lawn mower they make but it is super high quality. Same with their M18 hedge trimmer. That’s why I was surprised to see 3 whole leaf blowers by them.

So we investigated and ranked them.

3. Milwaukee M12 12V Compact Spot Blower

At first glance, this tool seems like a nice-to-have accessory. Lo-and-behold I was super surprised to feel how strong it could blow.

Extends well.

Normally, compact blowers are good to use without a nozzle to dry your car after a detailed wash. While this Milwaukee blower is good for that, it also comes with three nozzles. The wide sweeping nozzle is great for truck beds and job sites. But it also comes with a rubber nozzle and extension nozzle. These take it to the next level and can downright replace your leaf blower at home altogether.

Compact but also legit.

To put this into perspective, it measures at about 110 mph in a nice, direct stream. This is similar to most electric blowers on the market.

You can see the trigger up close with the lock.

Lastly, this bad boy has a ton of settings near the handle that gave me complete control over the job. Speed settings, a speed lock, and even a variable speed trigger were things that stuck out to us as putting this over the “compact blower” category and potentially into full blown  “regular blower” territory.

This thing is dirt cheap, especially if you already own the M12 battery. It looks like Home Depot has it on sale for under $100 right now.

2. Milwaukee M18 Compact Multipurpose Utility Blower (0884-20)

You might need a concealed carry license for this Milwaukee blower. While it is pocket size, at just over two feet long, it actually is surprisingly powerful. I’d liken it to the Kimo handheld blower we reviewed, which we wrote about and did a nice lil’ video for.

In fact, they look like they’re made by the same parent company or something.

Either way, we loved that blower and we loved this one, too. In fact, we keep it in our coat closet right by our front door and use it to clean out the front walkway and patio before guests come over. It moves air at 160 MPH in an absolute laser.

Not bad!

While it definitely isn’t the blower for your backyard leaf clearing jobs, it is great for wet leaves, sawdust, tight spaces, and other quick uses.

It also comes with a little extension nozzle that takes it a bit further.

The Kimo has an uncanny similarity.

I ranked this number two because it doesn’t have a brushless motor and therefore won’t have quite the efficiency or durability when compared to brushless motors.

Either way, this thing is really slick and an awesome gift for dad.

You can get it on Amazon for a great price, with the battery included or at Home Depot – you should price compare.

1. Milwaukee M18 FUEL 120 MPH (2724-20) Leaf Blower

There is a reason this leaf blower is number one. The Milwaukee M18 FUEL series is sweet and features the top-of-the-line Milwaukee products.

Nice little trigger action on this bad boy.

Firstly, it has a nice brushless motor from their POWERSTATE brushless motor line. This gives this Milwaukee blower some extreme torque, allowing it to get to full blast in one second. Cool but doesn’t change that much. The real benefits to the brushless motor come in its long life and durability. Brushless motors provide a much cooler running motor than typical brushed motor.

Speed control on the blower.

Another thing I love about this blower is the higher CFMs. Whereas the other two blowers are high speed, but narrow streams – this blower will have high speed AND a wide stream. This is the ideal portfolio of a blower you can use to move all the leaves off your driveway or backyard.

This blower has all the bells and whistles as well – variable speed trigger, speed lock, and all comes in under 4 lbs.

This is a top of the line blower and if you go reference my “what to look for in a blower” paragraph at the beginning – the M18 blower checks all the boxes.

You can get this one from trusty old Home Depot for a great price.

What to look for in an electric blower

Cordless blowers come in a bunch of shapes and sizes but there are three basic things you need to understand:

  • CFM – Cubic feet per minute. This is a measure of air output on the blower. Higher CFM = more power, but not necessarily more miles per hour. High CFM with a wide nozzle = lower MPH. High CFM with a narrow nozzle = high miles per hour. Ideally, you want both a high CFM with a narrow to medium nozzle for most residential jobs.
  • Usability – what is the point of having a blower if it is hard to use? Have to get one that is lightweight, easy to start, and has some functions that make your life easier.
  • Motor type – brushless motors reign supreme. Cooler running motors with more torque, a longer run-time, and last many more years. Brushless is a no brainer when picking a blower.

These are three things you need to pay attention to when looking through the specifications.

3 Power Dewalt Leaf Blowers That Wreck Leaves

Dewalt leaf blowers are a household name. Not only do most people own a bunch of Dewalt products already, but they have really stepped up their game lately.

Dewalt has a pretty sweet string trimmer, lawn mower, and even a super powerful trimmer and blower kit that absolutely slaps.

**SPOILER** Best Dewalt Leaf Blower: Dewalt 20V Max Leaf Blower because it has great strength for around the house, a super versatile battery system, and is extremely comfortable.

But they’ve started diversifying their product suite and have a ton of new blowers.

Fortunately, we had the pleasure of using some of these suckers (or blowers) and have put out our definitive ranking guide.

So, let’s get started.

The official Dewalt Leaf Blower ranking

Now that you’re up to speed on leaf blower terminology, let’s move forward with ranking the best Dewalt leaf Blowers on planet Earth.

3. DEWALT FLEXVOLT 60V MAX Blower, Brushless, Handheld, 3-Ah Battery (DCBL770X1)

The Dewalt Flexvolt 60V MAX handheld blower is pretty sweet. One of my favorite things about this blower is that it puts out a deceivingly-high 423 CFM of air with speeds up to 129 MPH. But wait, there’s more!

It also comes with a flat concentrator nozzle that can increase air speeds up to 175 MPH. That is freaking fast.

What is he blowing? Concrete?

This blower comes with a nice brushless motor as well, making it darn near perfect. My only complaint is that most folks looking for a blower are looking for one that is going to push leaves like a dang cannon. This one is more of a sniper, good for wet leaves and smaller areas.

If you already own the 60V battery and have a similar tool like the Dewalt 60V chainsaw, then this one is a no brainer. It is on sale right now on Amazon and is also for sale at Home Depot, which includes the battery.

2. DEWALT 60V MAX FLEXVOLT Leaf Blower 125-MPH, 600-CFM

What the previous Dewalt blower lacks, this one totally makes up for. This 60V Max Flexvolt Dewalt blower has 600 CFM – which basically means it is a cannon of air. CFMs this high are pretty rare on electric leaf blowers.

Kinda cool looking.

This blower again has a nice brushless motor, a grip that resembles your electric power drill, a variable speed trigger, and a speed lock. I like the speed lock function here because sometimes I want to do mid-speed and my finger cramps holding it at the exact speed I want (first world problems).

Very nice – has a cool red spinny cone for extra effects.

All-in-all, this is a great blower from Dewalt and comes in at just over 9lbs. Comparing this one to the one before, they are both 60V blowers but have different purposes. This one is for pushing big piles of leaves and the other is for smaller spaces and wetter leaves. They are both great blowers, but really fit two different demographics.

Where you slide the battery in.

This Dewalt blower can be found on sale at Amazon for a decent price right now (especially if you get the tool-only version).

If you want to grab it from Home Depot, that’s where we got ours. You can check the price here.

1. DEWALT 20V MAX* XR Leaf Blower, 125-MPH, 450-CFM (DCBL722P1)

The Dewalt 20V Max leaf blower is really good and an amazing price. I wrote about this specific leaf blower once before, but they’ve made some major improvements.

The first major improvement they’ve made is a nice removable concentrator tip. With this blower, you get the best of both worlds. You have the ability to snipe wet leaves or clean off your porch as needed, with the added ability to remove the concentrator and use the wider mouth for shoving big piles of leaves.

This one has all the great things – a brushless motor, a nice variable speed trigger with a lock, and it’s about half the weight of the blower above – just over 5 lbs.

Yep, the one we own.

Holy cow. This one is also relatively quiet (about as much noise as a blender) and is the most affordable of the three.

In my opinion, this is hands-down the best Dewalt blower on the market. The best part is that the 20V battery on this one is one of their most popular battery lines and is what the power drill uses (among hundreds of other tools).

Where you can grab the best Dewalt Leaf Blower

You can grab this one WITH a battery for an insane price on Amazon. If you want to grab it locally, grab it from Home Depot online and pick it up in store.

5 Inexpensive Black + Decker Weed Eaters

The Best Black and Decker string trimmer is the 20V Max 12-inch string trimmer that has a two-in-one functionality that allows it to also be a great edger. I like this Black and Decker weed eater because it is super lightweight, inexpensive, and great for beginners.

You can grab this 2-in-1 weed eater from Amazon for a really good price.

Here is the full ranking of the best Black & Decker weed eaters:

  1. Black & Decker 20V Max 12-inch 2-in-1 String Trimmer and Edger
  2. Black and Decker 40V MAX 13in. 2in1 cordless string trimmer
  3. Black+Decker String Trimmer, 6.5-Amp, 14-inch (GH900)
  4. Black + Decker 20V MAX PowerConnect 10 in string trimmer and sweeper
  5. Black + Decker 20V Max 10 inch string trimmer (LST201)

5 Best Black and Decker String Trimmers (RANKED)

The beautiful thing about the Black and Decker string trimmers is that one of them, if not all of them, are always on sale on Amazon. That’s where we recommend grabbing these, mostly because of their great return policy and quick shipping. You can also grab them at your local Home Depot.

5. Black + Decker 20V Max 10 inch string trimmer (LST201)

One of the most basic, simple, and least expensive string trimmers on the market, the 20V MAX 10 inch string trimmer from Black and Decker is a bargain.

Fewer parts to break!

Although I would never use this in a big yard, for small yards this trimmer is great. This is a very basic trimmer that is going to be just fine cleaning up small patches of grass that you missed mowing and giving a nice, clean line that you would expect from any other trimmer.

Definitely don’t get this if you have a yard with more than ¼ of an acre – you’ll need more power for sure.

All-in-all, this is a really good price for someone looking to make a quick, easy buy. You can get it on Amazon for well under $100.

4. Black + Decker 20V MAX PowerConnect 10 in string trimmer and sweeper combo

While this is likely actually the least powerful of the string trimmers on this list, Black + Decker made it an enticing combo by throwing in a sweeper. The combination here means that you get a nice lawn tool set-up without breaking the bank.

Two for one is always fun.

This 20V MAX string trimmer is about 10 inches, which has to be one of the smaller string trimmers in production. Fortunately, it can still flip to an edger and be used for both. This is the ideal string trimmer for someone with a tiny yard who wants to do it all with only a few tools.

To make it even better, they throw in a little mini-blower that can help clean up the grass clippings and do some light-duty leaf blowing.

You can get both of them, with the battery, for a wonderful price on Amazon.

3. Black+Decker String Trimmer, 6.5-Amp, 14-inch (GH900)

This Black and Decker string trimmer isn’t battery-powered, but is a great corded electric string trimmer. While it isn’t going to provide you the same portability that a battery powered string trimmer provides, it gives you reliable power without being concerned about the battery charge.

This is a nice, big trimmer and won’t run out of battery.

Other than requiring an extension cord, this string trimmer is great. It has a perfect size at about 14 inches and has a lot of the same capabilities as the big dogs. One thing I love about it is the automatic feed spool feature, which will automatically send out more trimmer lines when you start to run low.

Super light.

The last thing I will say about this weed eater is that it is pretty short and lightweight, so it is super easy to store wherever you need to put it. At just under 6 lbs and about 3 feet long, it can practically go anywhere. We own this one and did a full review of the 14 inch 6.5 A version.

You can grab this one on Amazon for a really good price.

2. Black and Decker 40V MAX 13in. 2in1 cordless string trimmer/edger with POWERCOMMAND Kit

This one wins the award for longest name. Actually, of all the string trimmers on this list, this one is definitely the most heavy duty. It has the classic 13 inch string trimmer, which is great for medium yards, but also has the wheel conversion to an edger. At 13 inches, this will actually  produce a pretty sweet edger (for a string trimmer).

I love that this one uses a 40V battery as well, a nice step up from the 20V series the other trimmers use. This one also comes with a dial that controls how much power you’d like to use, giving you control over the runtime.

They have great hedge trimmers!

With the 40V battery, you can use things like the snow blower, chainsaw, hedge trimmers, or lawnmower. Step up your game with this trimmer and build your garage around the 40V series.

You can grab this one for a great price over on Amazon.

1. BLACK+DECKER 20V Max String Trimmer/Edger, 12-Inch (LSTE525)

Probably the best mix of versatility, power, and price – the 12-inch 20V Max string trimmer wins the number one spot. This trimmer comes with a decently-sized 12-inch cutting swath that’s big enough for medium yards and small enough for small yards. It also includes the wheel on the top that allows you to flip this tool to an edger-type of tool to clean up the lines around your driveway or sidewalk.

Reminds me of the GT Revolution from WORX.

The beauty of this product is that the 20V Max series is huge with BLACK+DECKER and can be  used with tons of other tools. From a usability perspective, it also has a nice easy-feed system to get the trimmer line out after it gets beaten up.

Super easy to use!

All-in-all, this one packs the same punch as some of the bigger brands with the price of one  way smaller. 10,000 reviews on Amazon back me up on this one.

You can grab it on Amazon for a nice sale right now.

What to look for in a string trimmer

Cordless weed eaters come in all shapes and sizes. They aren’t highly complicated pieces of equipment, but they do have a few nuances. Here is how I see it:

  • Feel – Obviously this is subjective, but feel is everything to me. I have had weed eaters in the past where the handle is off to the side, making me torque my shoulders and back. Bad. You are going to be using this often and for a long time, so make sure it is comfortable.
  • Motor – brushless motors are king here. They are longer lasting and more durable. Brushless motors also produce more torque and less heat. With Black and Decker having a more “budget-friendly” line, you may not be able to find this without spending the big bucks.
  • Batteries – Try to get a battery that can be used with other tools. For example, I have Black and Decker’s 20V battery for my power drill – getting a trimmer that takes the same battery is great for saving money and wall space for charging.
  • Curved vs Straight shaft – I always, always, always prefer straight shafts. They are so much easier to use and control. Curved shafts are better for smaller areas that require “mowing”, whereas straight shafts are better for precision and clean lines.

5 Battery Lawn Edgers That Perfectly Frame Your Lawn

The best battery powered lawn edger is the Greenworks Pro 80V lawn edger because it is super easy to use and comes with a great battery system from Greenworks.

We constantly get compliments about having the best grass in the neighborhood. But honestly, our grass itself looks just like each of our neighbors. So what’s the difference?

Clean, crisp borders around the yard separating the driveway and walkway from the grass. It is a small, subtle change but makes all the difference. Think about it like framing your yard. Imagine the Mona Lisa without a frame. It would look like something your kid would bring home to hang on the fridge (maybe a little better).

The new battery lawn edgers are awesome. So let’s check out which ones are the absolute best.

Bottom line – Here is our ranking of the best battery lawn edgers:

  1. Greenworks Pro 80V 8 inch Brushless Lawn Edger
  2. Greenworks 40V 8″ Brushless Lawn Edger
  3. EGO Power+ ME0800 8-Inch Edger Attachment & Power Head
  4. Kobalt 80-Volt Max 8-in Cordless Electric Lawn Edger
  5. Dewalt DCED472X1 Battery Lawn Edger

5 Greatest Battery Lawn Edgers: Ranked

Let’s get started! There are some great brands here, but a few that really stick out for their power, reliability, and price.

5. DEWALT DCED472X1 Edger

Dewalt is a household name, but not necessarily for lawn tools. Mostly known for their power drills, saws, and other contractor-grade equipment, Dewalt is a well-trusted and well-known brand.

Recently, they’ve dug into lawn tools and have put out some surprisingly high-quality, competitive stuff.

The gentle slope is a nice detail!

Their edger is actually pretty sweet. One of my favorite things about it is the squeeze trigger, which is way more comfortable on the hand and also provides a bit of a safety to prevent kids from using it.

The edger is really an attachment on their multi-tool, which has a bunch of different heads that give you a full toolkit to craft your yard around.

This one was designed by pros, as it has a gentle slope going into the edger to ensure that it is flush with the surface and providing a deep, clean cut.

The Dewalt battery lawn edger is on sale on Amazon right now and is normally a steep price, but also includes the head that can attach a ton of other tools.

4. Kobalt 80-Volt Max 8-in Cordless Electric Lawn Edger

Kobalt is one of those brands that was exclusively sold in Lowe’s stores across the country, then randomly showed up online and did really well. Kobalt has some high quality products and are a personal favorite of ours in the aesthetics department. They have a nice navy blue and black combo that is sleek and not some fluorescent color.

Kobalt’s 80V Max series is a great series to build a battery powered tool set around. They have an awesome mower and a bunch of really good blowers.

Kobalt’s products look cool.

One of my favorite things about this edger is that it is LONG, which I like for surgical precision when edging. It also has a nice brushless motor, which means more torque, a cooler motor, and longer life.

This one is for sale at Lowe’s – the perfect buy if you already own a Kobalt 80V Max battery.

3. EGO Power+ ME0800 8-Inch Edger Attachment & Power Head

EGO has great products, hands down. The power head is one of, if not the absolute best, top power heads on the market. Super versatile, reliable, and powerful. The EGO power head is a dang steal.

I like EGO Power+  products because they all use the 56V battery, from the lawn mower to the blower to the edger.

EGO products are built to last.

There isn’t anything particularly special or snazzy about this product, but it is one that I know and trust to do the job without fail. Driving around your neighborhood on a Sunday afternoon, I bet you’ll see one of these hanging in your neighbor’s garage. It will still be there in 5 years. Good stuff.

The EGO power head with the edger attachment can be bought together for a nice price, or the edger attachment can be purchased separately.

2. Greenworks 40V 8″ Brushless Battery Lawn Edger

Greenworks is one of our favorites brands – they have great products that are durable and reliable.

Their 40V series is awesome and can be used with over 60 tools. It is a great battery line to go with if you are looking to build out your lawn tool kit around a single battery.

The 40V edger they have is great. It has all the necessary ingredients for a great edger and similar to the EGO, comes with the power head that can be used with a bunch of different attachments.

That brushless motor at the base is cool, but also dangerous.

I ranked this one number two because it has the brushless motor (which is great) down at the bottom of the tool, where it is vulnerable to hitting pavement and breaking. Otherwise, this battery lawn edger is great.

It comes with a ton of reviews and a great price on Amazon, where you can also get the multi tool power head.

1. Greenworks Pro 80V 8 inch Brushless Edger

Greenworks’ Pro 80V battery line is the supreme battery-powered lawn tool line. They have an amazing 80V mower, incredibly powerful blowers, and this awesome edger.

This battery lawn edger is a dedicated edger – not part of a system of interchangeable parts. And it means business.

It has all the things you look for in an edger. Amazing battery system, easy to use handle, 4 year warranty, adjustable handle, brushless motor – the works.

The battery system here allows it to run for over 80 minutes, which is way more than you would ever need but speaks to the power of the 80V battery.

Coming in at about 17lbs, it’s surprisingly light and usable considering how long it is and how much power it puts out.

This battery lawn edger is on sale right now on Amazon and is an EXTREMELY reasonable price.

What’s the difference between trimming and edging?

Let’s set the record straight here. Edging and trimming are two very different things that are often mixed up.

Edging utilizes a motorized blade that digs into the dirt between a hard surface (street, driveway, sidewalk) and your yard. Edgers push up dirt and dig a small little trench that cleanly separates the yard and surface. Edgers can do a little bit of trimming if grass is growing over the surface, but are not designed for full-scale grass shredding.

Trimmers are used to cut stray grass not reached or not accessible by mowing. Trimmers can also be used to cut the grass between hard surfaces and the yard, but don’t quite have the capability to edge as well as an edger does.

Nicely edged lawn.

Is it worth buying a battery lawn edger?

In my opinion, absolutely. Most trimmers now come with detachable heads that allow for an edger to pop right on. Edgers are what take your yard from good to great.

Can you edge with a trimmer? Can you trim with an edger?

If you are an absolute pro and have a high-powered trimmer, you can do some mild edging with a trimmer. If you use the GrassKicker weed eater string, you can get a really, really good edging job even with a weaker weed eater. Check it out below.

You still will not be able to dig way down deep to cause the best separation from surfaces, but it will give a similar appearance for a shorter amount of time.

You cannot trim with an edger unfortunately. The blade is just too big to finely cut small fragments of grass.

3 Mowers That Help You With Steep Banks and Hills

The best mower for hilly yards is the Greenworks Pro 80V Brushless Self-propelled mower because it has a strong self-propelled feature that does much of the heavy lifting. Lawn mowers and steep banks and hills don’t often get along. You end up hauling the dang mower straight up a hill, or try to do it sideways and end up missing a bunch of spots.

Today, I’ll break down my favorite mowers for mowing a hilly or sloped front yard:

  1. Greenworks Pro 80V Self-propelled mower
  2. Greenworks 40V 16” Cordless Electric Lawn Mower
  3. Makita XML03CM1 18” Brushless lawn mower

3 Lawn Mowers for Steep Lawns

It was hard to narrow down, but I was able to distill the list down to just three. I have to tell you, these three are titans in the electric lawn game. I am not bringing any bush league mowers to my recommendation list. These are not only top mowers for steep banks, but also top battery powered mowers in general. Let’s get started.

3. Makita XML03CM1 18” Brushless lawn mower

Makita mowers are pretty sweet. If you have owned any Makita products before, likely one of their power drills, you know that they have super high-quality products.

I put this mower at number three for a few reasons. For starters, it is heavier than the other two, coming in at over 80 lbs. It also does not have a self propelled function, meaning you are going to be pushing that 80 lbs, which is the average weight of a regular gas mower.

Not bad!

I have this one at number three because it is a high quality mower that is extremely durable without being overkill on size. If you have a big property, this one is the type I would keep for steep banks and hills that my lawn tractor or zero turn couldn’t reach or were unsafe. It uses the same batteries that are found in the power drills, saving you a ton of money on a new set of batteries.

This Makita mower is for sale on Amazon for a very reasonable price.

2. Greenworks 40V 16” Cordless Electric Lawn Mower

Greenworks is one of our favorite brands because they ONLY do battery powered lawn equipment. So they are the pros.

Anyways, we love the 40V 16” cordless mower from Greenworks because it is small and light. This mower is perfect for effortlessly tackling the steep banks and hills. Many people are concerned about having to push a mower, when in reality the difficult part is holding onto the mower if you are fighting gravity downhill. This is true if you cut in a vertical pattern and are moving downwards with the mower. It is also tough when cutting horizontally and trying to keep the mower straight instead of toppling over.

Gets the job done and light as a feather.

Worry no more – this mower weighs less than 40 lbs, making it an extremely easy to use mower for steep banks and hills. At 16 inches, you don’t have to worry about it taking up a ton of space in your garage, either.

In fact, this is one of the most popular mowers ever purchased on Amazon, with over 8,000 review comments left. You will probably see your neighbor with one.

Check it out on Amazon for a really great price.

1. Greenworks Pro 80V 21-inch Brushless Self-propelled Mower

Bring in the big dog. This mower is perfect in just about every way.

Brushless motor. Self propelled. Steel cutting deck. Amazing brand. Battery line that works with all Greenworks 80V products.

It is really a dream mower.

Thing of beauty!

I love it for hills because it can do a lot of the marching uphill for you. An underrated component of this mower is that it’s self-propelled function will help hold a steady and straight line when mowing horizontally on a hill. So basically you feel like you’re sideways, but the mower keeps marching forward.

This one is lighter than most gas mowers as well. You’ll be surprised at what it feels like to use on hills.

It is definitely worth the money and a great buy on Amazon.

What to look for in an electric lawn mower

When looking to purchase an electric lawn mower, you need to make sure you understand what things matter. You will get hit with a lot of technical specifications and marketing tactics. Totally forget them and focus on the things that impact you. Below are my recommendations:

  • Brand quality
    • Quality is going to be super important here. Everyone is in the electric mower game these days and there are a ton of junky mowers out there. Avoid anything from a weird brand on Amazon that takes 9 years to ship. It is probably being 3D printed in a Laotian bathroom. Go for brands that have consistent quality and focus on the details, not just flashy colors.
  • Metal where it matters.
    • Most electric mowers are plastic-y. Probably to reduce the weight of the mower so that the battery can get you further, but it feels cheap. Make sure to get metal where it matters – namely the deck. The deck is the part that covers the blades. Don’t get plastic here – a rock can rip through it.
  • Battery interoperability.
    •  A ten dollar word used here, but really just make sure to buy a mower with a battery that is compatible with other electric tools. Ryobi has this, so does Dewalt, and so do some of the Greenworks products. This will save you garage clutter and plug space.

If you have more questions, check out our guide to electric lawn mowers.

What you need to tackle hills with a lawn mower

Steep hills and embankments give every homeowner a fit. We all know the challenges they present, which is why we wrote this article.  Here’s what you need in a mower for steep hills:

  • Lightweight – it has to be able to be easily controlled and not topple over or get off track.
  • Self-propelled – this not only helps push the mower for you, but will keep the wheels moving straight with its forward momentum
  • Battery-powered – if you have a really steep hill, you can definitely run into issues with gas not funneling into the engine. Battery powered mowers avoid that.
  • A walk-behind mower – even if you have a big property, I would separately purchase a walk-behind mower for the steepest part of the hills or steep banks.

So here is what we recommend.

7 Cordless Blowers for Any Budget

The best budget cordless blower is the Greenworks 40V leaf blower and vacuum combo because it has a reliable motor, is decently powerful, and allows for you to also suck up leaves or grass for easy clean-up.

You can grab our number one choice Greenworks 40V blower here on Amazon for a great price.

Listen, I used to hate working in the yard. You walk out there and try to ignore the leaves as much as possible.

Don’t overcomplicate this! You can get a budget blower and it still does a great job, takes up minimal space in your garage, and barely makes a dent in your bank account.

Let’s get started.

Here are the great, cheap leaf blowers – ranked:

  1. Greenworks 40V Cordless Brushless Blower
  2. Greenworks 40V Cordless Blower
  3. Worx WG547 Turbine Blower
  4. Ryobi 40V Jet Fan Blower
  5. Kimo Cordless Blower
  6. Makita XBU05Z 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Blower
  7. Black and Decker 20V Max Sweeper

Budget Cordless Leaf Blowers: Ranked

Again, it can be done! You can find a great budget cordless leaf blower for a ridiculously low price and corded leaf blowers for an even lower one. We have found not only the most affordable blowers, but ranked them in terms of quality and power. A few of these we personally own and others we have tried and tested ourselves.

Let’s get this thing kicked off!

7. Black + Decker 20V MAX Cordless Sweeper with Power Boost

The Black and Decker 20V Max Cordless Sweeper with Power Boost is an affordable, trustworthy, budget cordless leaf blower that is a part of the 20V MAX battery series.

I’m going to stop here and tell you that if you own a Black and Decker 20V MAX series tool, buy  this blower. You can get the tool-only version for an insane price if you already own the battery.

Photo cred: Amazon.

The Black + Decker 20V Max blower gets up to 130 MPH, is really quiet, and can run for 25 minutes straight. The best part – it weighs under 4 lbs. It is technically considered a sweeper instead of a blower, mostly because it has a flat tapered nozzle. This makes it perfect for driveways, garages, and porches.

I would not get this blower if you’re trying to move massive piles of leaves. The tapered nozzle is powerful and great for a strong stream of air, but not going to cover a large area.

You can grab this one on Amazon for well under $100 when it goes on sale.

6. Makita XBU05Z 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Blower

Makita makes some dang high quality tools. If you’ve ever owned one of their power drills, you know exactly what I mean. They have recently jumped head-first into the lawn tool game as well. Makita leaf blowers are top notch and growing in popularity (you may have seen the TV commercials).

The Makita XBU05Z is a handheld, cordless, budget leaf blower that reaches speeds up to 220 MPH. Just like the other Makita tools you may already own, it just requires an 18V battery.

While smaller than most other blowers, it can clear out a sidewalk, front porch, or garage with the best of them. It is extremely easy to use, has the same grip as a power drill, and can be stored in a very small area.

Small and mighty!

At just a shade under $100, it is a great deal if you already own the battery with your other Makita tools. Grab it on Amazon today for about $95.

5. Kimo Cordless Blower and Vacuum

One of our personal favorites (because Mom bought it for us), we use this thing all the time. In fact, we did a full written review of the Kimo Cordless Blower and a full YouTube video. We love it.

While it is a lesser-known brand, it is the best option if you don’t own any yard tools. You can be battery-system agnostic and get a sweet blower/vacuum combo for a ridiculous price.

I use this one all the time to do a quick sweep of the porch, sidewalk, and driveway before we have people over. It can be stored in our coat closet and easily carried outside. It’s quiet, lightweight, and super cheap.

It also comes with a vacuum function, although I don’t use it that much. But the vacuum works well for sawdust or other things that you want to get rid of in a jiff.

Surprisingly strong. Easy to store.

You can read our full review of the Kimo Cordless blower here.

This thing sells for an amazing price on Amazon – under 90 dollars..

4. Ryobi 155 mph 300 CFM 40-Volt Lithium-ion Cordless Jet Fan Blower

So I bought the tool-only version of this cordless budget leaf blower because I already owned the multi-tool Ryobi 40V trimmer and edger. I got it for an awesome deal since I had the batteries already.

Ryobi 40V blower assembly. Easy as pie.

This Ryobi 40V blower works really well. It is easy to assemble right out of the box. One of my favorite things about it is that it has a variable speed trigger, meaning I can control how quickly the air flows. I use this blower every weekend after cutting the grass.

It comes in clutch when the maple tree in the backyard suddenly dumps thousands of leaves on our back deck. It gets rid of all of the leaves in super short order and doesn’t wake up the kids. Gotta love it. If you own Ryobi 40V products, this one is a no brainer.

You can get it on Amazon like I did for a tad more than the others, but still a reasonable price.

3. WORX 20V Turbine Cordless Two-Speed Leaf Blower – WG547

The WORX WG547 cordless budget leaf blower is a pretty sweet looking blower. It has a jet-engine type of motor inside that can put out 75 mph of air, or 340 CFMs.

You may notice that the MPH here is not very high. The CFM, relatively, is pretty dang high. This means that the blower has a wider nozzle. I would NOT use this for wet grass or heavy debris. I would absolutely use this for a pile of leaves.

Photo cred: Amazon. Thing is pretty sweet.

Listen, it isn’t going to absolutely destroy leaves like a backpack blower, but it also doesn’t cost $600. It will definitely be able to clear loose leaves from your patio or driveway with ease.

Worx is a great brand and is in almost every garage or shed around the country.

At under $120, this thing is an absolute steal on Amazon.

2. Greenworks 40V (150 MPH / 135 CFM) Cordless Blower

Unlike the last blower, the Greenworks 40V 150 MPH / 135 CFM cordless blower is a high-speed, low air-volume blower. These are super interesting to use because they are basically beams of air that fly out of a narrow tip.

This one is awesome for cleaning off the driveway after a fresh mow. It can also lift off anything underneath a chair, on top of your outdoor tables, and between cracks that other blowers can’t reach.

Flat tip = high speed.

Before you pull the trigger (pun intended), realize that this one isn’t great for clearing all the leaves from your lawn. You can do it, but you’ll be out there for a while. The Greenworks 150 MPH blower is about precision and power, not as much about pushing big loads of air.

It’s a great deal (actually a crazy deal on Amazon), has over 15k reviews, and comes in under $60. That’s a hot tamale.

1. Greenworks 40V (185 MPH/340CFM) Brushless Cordless Leaf Blower

The Greenworks 40V 185 MPH brushless cordless budget leaf blower and vacuum combination that makes cleaning up leaves extremely easy. A six speed-option dial allows for you to have complete control over what you are blowing away. Coming in at under 6lbs with a runtime of over 20 minutes on the highest setting, you will be able to quickly crush whatever job you’re trying to do.

What I love most about this blower is the brushless motor. Brushless motors last way longer, have more torque, and operate cooler than brushed motors. This one is going to last you a long time.

Somehow insanely priced AND comes with a vacuum.

With the additional vacuum add-on pieces, you can easily blow all the leaves into a pile and suck them into a big bag, making cleaning up a snap.

The craziest thing about this blower is that Amazon must be broken or something. It is listed for $70 right now if you get the tool-only version. It honestly seems like a glitch or something.

Oh well – feel free to take advantage of it as long as it lasts on Amazon.

Why we started The Lawn Review
