Milwaukee’s M18 Hedge Trimmer is Raw Power

Milwaukee’s M18 FUEL 24 inch hedge trimmer is one of the best hedge trimmers on the market because it has a heavy duty, popular battery system, a long cutting length, and a highly durable motor.

Milwaukee is known for insanely powerful products that perform at high levels. Think about their power drills and other tools that are trusted by the pros. They take that same power and oftentimes the same battery, and pack it into some yard tools.

Bottom Line: The Milwaukee M18 FUEL 24 inch hedge trimmers are the perfect combination of power, durability, and usability. Milwaukee’s M18 line of tools is absolutely incredible. You can grab yours here from Home Depot.

Milwaukee M18 FUEL 24 inch Hedge Trimmer

Okay enough blabbering, let’s get on with it. We had the distinct pleasure of getting our hands on the Milwaukee M18 FUEL 24 inch hedge trimmer when I borrowed it from my neighbor.

So, let’s check it out.

This trimmer feels solid and durable

Feel is the very first thing you experience when you pick up the Milwaukee M18 FUEL hedge trimmer. Ideally you want a hedge trimmer to feel lightweight but also solid. It is rare to get the two of those together.

The M18 FUEL hedge trimmer had a good combo of lightweight and also solid. It comes in at about 9lbs, which isn’t the lightest on the block, but still manageable. The thing felt as solid as a rock though, which is exactly what you want.

I’ve had a few Black and Decker hedge trimmers and while they are inexpensive, they feel plastic-y, uncomfortable, and overall low budget. The Milwaukee felt like the real deal.

Really easy to use and turn for harder-to-reach areas.

Once I started cutting, it felt like I could let gravity do the work with some minor guidance. While it was slightly heavier than I liked, it was easy to use. I’d give it about ⅘ stars  in the “feel” category.

The Milwaukee 24 inch hedge trimmer has unmatched power

Any lack in the “feel” department was completely made up by power. This is what Milwaukee is famous for. Power drills with serious power. Well, it really held up against my expectations here.

The extra weight on this hedge trimmer is there for a reason: it is holding a powerhouse motor inside that can cut up to ¾” of branches. That is pretty crazy for a hedge trimmer. Most think hedge trimmers can just cut little leaves off of tiny bushes.

Nope.

Milwaukee incorporated saw-like technology on this bad boy and somehow it can cut up to three quarters of an inch-thick branch. That’s wild.

But also able to cut through really thick branches.

The saw functions move back and forth at 3,400 exchanges per minute. Not sure what that means, but you can tell this thing can cut. One part that was shocking to me was the lack of vibration when trying to cut.

For example, with some of my Black + Decker hedge trimmers, when it’s really trying to work its way through a thicker branch it will stall and vibrate until it gets through it. I didn’t really experience that with the Milwaukee M18 hedge trimmer as compared to the Black and Decker.

The last part I will say about the motor on this M18 Hedge Trimmer is that it has a brushless motor. Milwaukee calls it the POWERSTATE brushless motor, which allows for more torque, more run-time, and a longer life. This is true – brushless motors are absolutely amazing for any tool, but mostly so on lawn tools because they have a tendency to overheat due to their long run-time (unlike power drills which don’t run for very long).

The M18 battery provides consistent power despite being a smaller voltage

I didn’t run into an issue with battery life on the Milwaukee M18 battery, but I think there’s a lot more to it than that.

On Milwaukee’s website, they go into pretty lengthy details about all the different trademarks and copyrights they have on the M18 battery. It almost makes it unreadable, but here is what I learned:

  • The M18 REDLITHIUM HIGH OUTPUT XC8.0 battery pack can put out 50% more power and can run significantly cooler than their old battery packs
  • There is something called REDLINK PLUS which is electronic intelligence (not sure what that means) that enables communication between tools and batteries.
    • This sounds like they are plotting to take us over. Whatever.

I think M18 batteries in general can run for over 100 minutes without any pressure. I would expect quite a bit less when trimming hedges and thicker brush. That being said, the M18 24 inch hedge trimmer battery will likely last for any job you are doing around the yard. 

If the battery dies, take some time to clean up the previous section of hedges and use that time to recharge the battery. 

The M18 batteries can be used in a TON of other Milwaukee tools, so make sure to check out some of their other products to save money on batteries.

Cost and value of the Milwaukee M18 hedge trimmer

You can buy the M18 FUEL 24 in 18V cordless hedge trimmer for just under $200 on Home Depot’s website. It currently says that you can buy the tool-only version, which is considerably cheaper but comes without a battery.

It looks like Home Depot is running a special deal where if you buy the tool-only version, they throw in a free battery.

Confusing, but whatever. This is a great price when compared to similar-quality hedge trimmers like the ones from Makita, which are much more expensive.

Overall review: Milwaukee M18 FUEL 24 in 18V cordless hedge trimmer

The Milwaukee M18 24” hedge trimmer is a dang beast. This is going to be able to tackle any hedge trimming job with power and grace.

Would I buy this if I was a 75+ grandma? Probably not, I would probably go with a cheaper, lighter hedge trimmer. But most folks that can handle an 8-10lb hedge trimmer will find that this one is extremely powerful, easy to use, and long-lasting.

I Tried It: Kobalt 40V Max String Trimmer

Kobalt’s 40V string trimmer is one of those cool blue lawn tools that can be found at Walmart, Lowe’s and Amazon. Their 40V MAX lineup of tools is pretty expansive and known for being powerful.

Kobalt has some nice lines of batteries. A 40V line, a 40V MAX line (yes, there’s a difference), and some 80V products as well.

Bottom Line: The Kobalt 40V Max String Trimmer is a great lawn tool because it has a brushless motor, a wide cutting swath, and a nice battery series. You can grab it on Amazon or at Lowes.

Let’s break it down:

Kobalt 40V Max cordless string trimmer: Features and benefits

This weed eater is plastered all over Lowes, but you have a ton of others to choose from like EGO’s weed eaters and a bunch more. Here are some of the unique elements of the Kobalt 40V MAX string trimmer.

It is powerful

Kobalt’s string trimmers mostly come in a 40V battery package, meaning it is optimally designed for yards up to ½ acre. Some people think this sounds weak, but honestly most yards are under a ½ acre – so what does it matter?

Yes, if you are trailblazing in the woods then you may want to step it up to a gas-powered or commercially-focused string trimmer. But most of us aren’t.

The 15 inch version looking nice!

When comparing sizes of Kobalt string trimmers, you want to think about the cutting swath, or width of the cutting path. This is where I like to go slightly bigger. A 15 or 16 inch cutting swath can handle thicker areas of grass and brush. Another benefit to larger cutting swath string trimmers is that they do a tremendous job replacing edgers. 

If you are looking for power, most of us are going to be totally content with the 40V max battery offered by Kobalt. If you are wanting to really “max” out the power, go with the 15 or 16 inch model.

Kobalt’s string trimmer is very comfortable to use

Feel is everything.

If you’ve ever used a traditional gas-powered string trimmer, you know how heavy and unwieldy they can be. And if you’ve ever tried to use one for an extended period of time, you know how quickly they can start to hurt your back and shoulders. For me, I am very tall and get wonky shoulder pain pretty quickly.

I love these types of handles that have a “butterfly” trigger.

The Kobalt 40V string trimmer is a game changer in this regard. It’s incredibly lightweight and easy to use, and the battery is positioned perfectly to give it a nice balance. Plus, the adjustable handle means that you can customize it to fit your height and reach. In other words, it’s the perfect tool for anyone who wants to get their yard work done without having to deal with the pain and discomfort of a gas-powered trimmer.

I love having longer, straight string trimmers because they have a nice see-saw effect that, when balanced appropriately, make the job easy. Longer shafts also allow for surgical precision – like using a paintbrush.

You can use the Kobalt 40V Max battery with a ton of other tools

Battery life is everything and it is also nothing. The 40V line of string trimmers from Kobalt throws out “half an acre” of run-time. But what does that mean? Surely, you can’t trim your entire yard like a mower if it is half an acre?

It’s tough to say. Battery life is dependent on the work being done – is it some super thick brush you are cutting? Are you edging and digging into the ground? Are you starting and stopping a lot? Are you using it on a low-speed setting?

There are a ton of variables, but expect this to last for about 30-45 minutes with normal use. I have never run into a problem with battery power when I have been trimming, but if I tack on edging to that and then put the battery on the blower and do some blower work – then yeah, my battery starts to run lower.

Made by the same people?

Tough to say here, but I think the more important point is to make sure you have a fully charged battery, grab a battery that can be used in a bunch of different tools, and don’t expect to be able to go all day.

The cons

As much as it pains me to complain about the Kobalt 40V string trimmer, I have to bring to light a few things. I am not a fan of the motor on this. It is a brushed motor, not brushless. This means that it may not last as long as its brushless counterparts, will get hotter, and has slightly less torque.

I have also read that some online ordering can be sketchy. One reviewer at Amazon said that they bought the tool-only version and it looked like someone bought the full version, took out the battery, and then made someone pay for both separately.

Sounds weird. 

One secret

The same company that makes motors for Greenworks makes them for Kobalt. Greenworks has a great reputation. While I’m surprised this isn’t brushless, this is probably going to be the best non-brushless electric trimmer series on the market.

Kobalt 40V MAX string trimmer: Review and recommendation

The jury is in: this is a good string trimmer. It is a GREAT string trimmer if you already have 40V MAX batteries, because you can get the tool only version for significantly cheaper.

It is a good string trimmer if you’re new to electric tools and are looking to start with the Kobalt series.

It is a bad string trimmer if you are working commercially or have over ½ an acre of land you’re trying to clean up.

EGO Split Shaft vs Straight String Trimmer (Explained)

So how do you pick?

EGO String Trimmers: Split vs. Straight Shaft

Okay, let’s settle this. A lot of confusion around this. Some of you may have seen the EGO split shaft or you may have heard it called the EGO hinge shaft.

Either way, we need to get to the bottom of it.

EGO String Trimmer Shaft Differences

EGO string trimmers come in both carbon fiber and aluminum shafts.

When I think of carbon fiber products, I think of them as generally lighter. This is not the case, however. The aluminum shafts versions of these string trimmers are about 7 lbs. The carbon  fiber shafts range from 7.5 to 12 lbs.

The key difference in carbon fiber and aluminum is that the carbon fiber trimmer shafts are more geared towards commercial use. Why? Because commercial landscapers are throwing stuff in the truck and speeding to the next site. They want the durability that a carbon fiber shaft offers. 

A straight shaft! Typically used on commercial landscapers trucks.

What’s the difference between the split shaft and the straight shaft on the EGO trimmer?

The main difference is that the split shaft can fold in half before it is fully assembled, whereas the straight shaft comes in one, long piece.

In fact, the split shaft is never meant to be folded in half again after initial assembly. This is likely for storage or shipping reasons with certain retail stores.

Don’t let this impact whether or not to buy a straight vs split shaft string trimmer. Ultimately, they are both the same and offer no material difference in functionality. Sadly, this trips a lot of people up.

So it’s not a multi-tool power head?

Nope, EGO does offer a separate multi-tool power head, but the split shaft, or hinged shaft, is NOT that.

So what’s the best EGO string trimmer?

For residential use, I would probably grab the EGO Power+ 15” string trimmer with powerload.

This one has a really nice, wide cutting swath. I also like that it has a brushless motor, variable trigger speed, and powerload technology (basically helps you reload replacement trimmer lines really quickly.

It has a carbon shaft just like the commercial ones, which means it will last quite a while. 

And to break the stigma, this one actually has a split shaft. Shows you how much I am not concerned about that feature.

Ryobi vs Sun Joe Pressure Washers: Side-by-side Comparison

Ryobi and Sun Joe pressure washers are both electric, light duty tools that are extremely popular. When comparing the two, I liked the Sun Joe SPX3000 – but still think you can do better by grabbing the Sun Joe SPX3500.

So today we have decided to compare the Ryobi 2300 PSI 1.2 GPM Electric Pressure Washer (Home Depot’s best seller) to the Sun Joe SPX3000 (Amazon’s best seller).

If you are looking for a pressure washer for use around the house, then you have undoubtedly stumbled upon both of these in your quest.

Ryobi vs Sun Joe Pressure Washer: A Breakdown

Now that we know what to look for in a pressure washer, we can apply some scrutiny to both the Sun Joe SPX3000 and the Ryobi 2300 PSI Electric pressure washers. Beware, it could get ugly.

We do compile a list of the some nice, inexpensive Sun Joe pressure washers and the some equally nice electric Ryobi pressure washers if you are looking for something else.

Ryobi and Sun Joe have similar PSI and power

The Sun Joe SPX3000 is not called the SPX3000 because of its PSI. In fact, the SPX3000 only has 2030 PSI. Do not be confused by this. 

The Ryobi 2300 PSI pressure washer has…..2300 PSI. True to the name. 

Actually looks more powerful, but has about the same

Obviously 2300 PSI is greater than 2030 PSI. This is actually not that big of a difference when it comes to the type of work you’ll be doing. When you actually get into the 3000 PSI range is when you can start talking about graffiti removal, concrete removal, etc. Anywhere in the 2000s is going to be household type of work.

Advantage: It’s a tie!

Ryobi has better nozzles than Sun Joe’s pressure washers

Now that we have pinpointed nozzles as an important feature, let’s see how the Sun Joe SPX3000 and the Ryobi 2300 PSI electric pressure washers stack up.

The Sun Joe SPX3000 comes with five quick-connect nozzles. They say quick connect because you can simply slide them on and off with a cool little contraption on the side of the nozzle. The SPX3000 has 0, 15, 25, and 40 degree tips plus a soap spray tip. 

The Ryobi  2300 PSI electric pressure washer comes with the same tips as the SPX3000, but with an additional “turbo nozzle”. The turbo nozzle provides essentially the same exact power as the 0 degree nozzle, but over a much wider area. 

Here you can see that the Turbo is the same as 0 degree, except wider.

The key benefit provided by this turbo nozzle on the Ryobi pressure washer is for those that are wanting to blast away dirt from larger areas. This turbo nozzle is ideal for cleaning off a sidewalk or a driveway. The 0 degree nozzle has the same power, but can only cover a small area because of how narrow the stream is. 

Advantage: Ryobi 2300 PSI electric pressure washer.

Ryobi has better wheels on their pressure washer

Okay so both of these pressure washers have wheels. Most do. But there’s a big difference between a horse and buggy and a Ferrari.

The SPX3000 from Mr. Joe has a big set of wheels on the back, basically making it function  like a dolly. Tilt outback and move it. Actually, this thing sort of looks like a vacuum anyways so maybe that’s a better comparison. The wheels on this are what I would consider “dinky”. 

Yeah, I said it. They are plastic, not very functional, and don’t adapt well to not a completely smooth surface. All of this negativity to basically say this could topple over relatively easily. And that’s actually one of the most frequent complaints this product receives.

On the other hand, the Ryobi 2300 PSI has two big rubber wheels that allow for easy transport. One thing I love about the design of the Ryobi 2300 PSI is that it has a metal bar that extends down from the front and makes it extremely sturdy. I grabbed the top and gave it a nice rock side-to-side and it didn’t budge. Good stuff.

Advantage: Ryobi 2300 PSI electric pressure washer.

Sun Joe’s SPX3000 is easier to use than Ryobi

Usability and feel are extremely important when it comes to using a pressure washer. You will become best buds with this tool because you will hold it for HOURS. So you better like how it feels. 

Candidly, most pressure washer wands are the exact same. Same trigger, mostly plastic body with a metal barrel. Not a big distinction between these two as the nozzles on both are quick-connect.

Both have a 25 ft hose so will take you the exact same distance. Both have similar entry points for the hose on both the machine and the wand. 

These two pressure washers from the wand up are about the exact same. 

The only real differences in usability are the difference in cord length and in weight. The cord on the Ryobi 2300 PSI is about 5 feet longer than the Sun Joe. A modest extension that is slightly better.

The SPX3000 weighs only 31 lbs whereas the Ryobi 2300 PSI is about 49 lbs. That makes a big difference for a lot of people. 

Only weighs 31lbs – can’t get much better than that.

Neither pressure washer is reliable

Let’s get straight to it: both of these pressure washers have had some complaints about reliability. One I have personally experienced and the other I’ve only heard.

My neighbor has the Ryobi 2300 PSI and it collects dust in his garage. Why? Well – the o-ring around the hose nozzle broke off, so it leaks out a ton of the pressure and is now useless. He plans on buying a new one. 

The SPX 3000 I haven’t had any issues with. BUT there are a lot of complaints about the plastic portion that connects the entry hose to the body of the pressure washer having significant leaks. 

This claim is backed up by the creation of the SPX3500, which is the exact same as the SPX3000 but with a metal connection piece. Hmmmmmm…….

Anyways, I hate to do this again but..

Advantage: Nobody.

The Sun Joe SPX3000 is less expensive than the Ryobi pressure washer

The SPX3000 retails around $200 but can often be found for around $170, which is a good deal.

The Ryobi 2300 PSI pressure washer comes in a lot higher at your local Home Depot (check price here because it changes often).

Do I need to do one of those advantage things here, or is it clear?

What to look for in a pressure washer

You gotta know what to look for on these Mr Joe’s bad boys! Each one looks basically the same, has a complex acronym name, and comes in a similar color.

Nozzles Matter

When choosing a pressure washer, you should pay attention to the nozzles included in the package. Two types of spray nozzles are available, adjustable spray nozzles that can be controlled and quick-connect nozzles with predefined spray patterns.  

The predefined spray patterns typically come in different angles, allowing for you to quickly switch between a broad, lower pressure spray or a narrow, higher pressure stream.

Soap tank

Additionally, you may want to consider a soap tank – equipped pressure washer. Some of these pressure washers have “foam cannons” where you can simply add some soap and it will mix it in with the water. Pretty cool.

I recommend a soap tank for cars and windows.

Wheels on pressure washers

Despite these seemingly minor features, they can have a big impact, especially with larger units. No sense in lugging around one of these in your yard and tripping all over the place.

Hose types

There’s a big difference between how easy or difficult it is to use a pressure washer based on the kind of hose that comes with it. Stiff, rigid hoses make it extremely difficult to have any maneuverability without messing up the job or knocking over the base.

Portability

Even if this has the drawback of making the unit less powerful, a portable, smaller pressure washer will be a better choice if you have to move around or carry the unit with you. Most of us do this, especially if you are doing the exterior of your house.

Totally depends on the job you are trying to do.

Battery Life: EGO 56V vs Ryobi 40V mowers

So much to talk about when it comes to battery life. First, if you haven’t already, you should check out our battery guide for commonly asked questions among the biggest lawn tool battery brands.

But today we are here to talk about the EGO 56V vs Ryobi 40V mower batteries. In its simplest form, the EGO 56V *ON AVERAGE* has about 15 minutes more battery life than the Ryobi 40V mower. 60 minutes on the EGO 56V whereas the Ryobi 40V runs for about 45 minutes (in case you couldn’t do math).

There are major factors here that influence battery life in mowers. The first is the density of the grass – obviously more density of grass is going to require more output and a slower pace. The next major factor is blade height – same issue as grass density.

The last major consideration is the self propelled function. We felt that the self-propelled function on the EGO 56V was STRONGER than the Ryobi 40V. And the battery lasts longer. 

The winner of this category: the EGO 56V mower.

Storability of EGO compared to Ryobi mowers

I know you’re already sick of me saying this but the Ryobi 40V and EGO 56V mower store folded in half in basically a completely identical way.

So it’s a tie, right?

WRONG!

The EGO mower has a simple snap that you lift, telescope the poles inward, then fold over. The Ryobi 40V has a few other points that you have to tinker with before folding in half.

This is one of those things you just can’t do with a gas mower. You try folding it in half and you will end up with oil all over the engine and the floor of your garage. Another huge benefit to both of these mowers.

But the winner of this category? The EGO 56V mower.

Mowing Experience: EGO 56V vs Ryobi 40V mowers

This is a really dense topic, so let’s break it into chunks.

Mower Deck comparison

The first thing I looked at with both of these mowers was the deck. First eye test for me is whether or not one was metal. Nope, both are plastic.

Second eye test was width. The Ryobi comes in at 20 inches whereas the EGO 56V mower is 21 inches. Advantage: EGO (unless you have a smaller yard).

The last deck portion I looked at was the height adjustment. They are the exact same on both mowers.

Maneuverability

The second thing I looked at with both of these mowers was maneuverability. Maneuverability is huge and this one was pretty clear. 

The Ryobi 40V mower is extremely lightweight. It is so easy to maneuver around corners because you can lift it and reset it without trouble. The EGO mower, however, is a lot heavier and bulkier, making it more difficult to maneuver.

Self-propelled function

Next, the self-propelled functions were brought under the microscope with these mowers. The EGO 56V mower’s self-propelled function is like a Ferrari. It lurches you forward and does way more of the work than the Ryobi. The Ryobi’s self-propelled function was a bit delayed and slightly weaker.

Sound

The EGO is WAY louder than the Ryobi. About all we have to say about that.

Overall experience

This is a tough one. On one hand, you have a super lightweight mower that is quiet and easy to maneuver with the Ryobi 40V mower. On the other, you have a heavier, sturdier mower that has a beast of a self-propelled function but is louder. 

Its a beauty.

Both have tradeoffs and can be great in their own ways. It’s a tie!

Cost and value: EGO 56V vs Ryobi 40V mowers

The EGO 56V select cut series is generally $30-$50 more than the Ryobi 40V mower across, Lowe’s, Home Depot, and Amazon.

This one is tough! They are similar in performance and have a ton of the same features. 

The EGO 56V mower is sturdier, feels powerful, and has a killer self-propelled function. The Ryobi 40V is a little lighter, more “plastic-y”, and slightly less expensive.

What to look for in an electric lawn mower 

When looking to purchase an electric lawn mower, you need to make sure you understand what things matter. You will get hit with a lot of technical specifications and marketing tactics. Totally forget them and focus on the things that impact you. Below are my recommendations:

Brand quality

Quality is going to be super important here. Everyone is in the electric mower game these days and there are a ton of junky mowers out there. Avoid anything from a weird brand on Amazon that takes 9 years to ship. It is probably being 3D printed in a Laotian bathroom. Go for brands that have consistent quality and focus on the details, not just flashy colors.

Metal where it matters. 

Most electric mowers are plastic-y. Probably to reduce the weight of the mower so that the battery can get you further, but it feels cheap. Make sure to get metal where it matters – namely the deck. The deck is the part that covers the blades. Don’t get plastic here – a rock can rip through it.

Battery interoperability.

 A ten dollar word used here, but really just make sure to buy a mower with a battery that is compatible with other electric tools. Ryobi has this, so does Dewalt, and so do some of the Greenworks products. This will save you garage clutter and plug space.

Self-propelled or not

I actually don’t like the self-propelled feature as much as others.. It doesn’t help you that much and it can drain the battery some. Older people and those with hills seem to love them, though.

A great size but can be a tad heavy.

The Makita XHU04PT 36V 25.5 inch Hedge Trimmer is one of the best on the market, and it comes at a great price. It has a six speed dial, which allows you to adjust the speed to suit your needs. It can also run two batteries, so you don’t have to worry about running out of power. The only downside is that it is a little bit heavier when it runs two batteries, but this is offset by the fact that it is a great price. The Makita XHU04PT 36V 25.5 inch Hedge Trimmer is a great choice for anyone looking for a quality hedge trimmer. 

You can get the tool only version for an absolute steal if you already own the 18V batteries.

It has great features including a brushless motor, speed control, and a rotating handle, but is a little too big. When Makita says “30 inches,” they mean it.

This thing is massive. If you’re looking for a hedge trimmer that will make your neighbors think you’re landscaping for the zoo, then this is the one for you. But if you’re like me and prefer something a little more manageable, then you might want to look elsewhere.

Makita is making lawn equipment?

Yep, Makita has been around since 1915 and started making power tools back in 1958. They are best known for their pneumatic tools, their drills, and other construction site tools. 

They’ve always had great corded and cordless tools, so I am honestly surprised it has taken them this long to make a push into the cordless lawn tool space. 

But not that they’re here, they aren’t going anywhere. With competitors pouring into the space like Dewalt and Milwaukee, it only makes sense to take what they do best (battery powered tools) and put them in mowers, blowers, and more. 

But why is Makita making lawn equipment NOW?

Good question. One thing I can tell you is that it is currently March of 2022 and Makita has a relatively small presence and market share in the lawn tool space.

Greenworks 40V chainsaws are top tier chainsaws that are perfect for use around your home and neighborhood.

If you’ve read any of our stuff before, you know that we are kind of obsessed with Greenworks. They did not pay us for this post and haven’t paid us for anything – we are being honest.

They are probably our favorite all-around electric lawn tool provider. 

As self-proclaimed chainsaw experts who have reviewed a handful of Stihl gas-powered chainsaws and a couple electric chainsaws as well, we decided to give the Greenworks 40V chainsaw a spin.

Greenworks G-MAX 40V 16 inch cordless chainsaw: Benefits and features

Let’s check out all of the features available in the Greenworks G-MAX 40V 16 inch mower. Many of these comparisons will be against a gas chainsaw, which are the most commonly used chainsaws. We also do some comparisons to other electric chainsaws.

Greenworks electric chainsaw Power

The first thing I will say that I love about the Greenworks cordless chainsaw is that it comes with a brushless motor.

For those of you who haven’t heard of brushless motors, they use magnets instead of friction to generate power. This comes with a few benefits:

  • Longer run-time
  • Significantly quieter and less “whiny”
  • More durable motor life
  • Double the torque

These things take a battery powered chainsaw from good to great. Oh, and the motor here is equivalent to a 35cc gas chainsaw. Woah.

Speaking of torque and power, this chainsaw can cut through a 15 inch piece of lumber pretty reliably. This is perfect for any homeowner who is trying to cut up a fallen tree after a storm.

Usability and feel of the Greenworks battery chainsaw

Another great thing about cordless chainsaws is the decrease in noise. While this isn’t absolutely quiet, it is significantly more quiet than a gas chainsaw.

The lack of fumes is also pleasing, meaning I can stay focused on a single cut without choking through the fumes. 

Me finding random excuses to use it.

The Greenworks 40V 16 inch chainsaw has some pretty slick anti-vibration technology. Compared to a gas chainsaw, and even some of the electric chainsaws out there, we loved the feel this one had. It was extremely “tight” feeling in that you knew it was delivering some serious linear power, but it didn’t make your hands go numb with vibration like some of the others.

Also, coming in at just over 10lbs makes it maneuverable and easy to use. The whole experience is pretty pleasant.

Maintenance, safety and battery life

Unlike most gas chainsaws, the Greenworks 16 inch 40V G-MAX chainsaw doesn’t require any gas or oil mixtures. The battery is a 40V 4 Ah lithium ion battery that can make it through about 140 cuts of smaller lumber – mostly the size of smaller branches (around 4 inches). 

Still, this battery life puts it in the top tier of battery powered chainsaws.

The Greenworks cordless chainsaw has a chain brake and a low kickback chain that helps prevent accidental kickbacks. 

This angle is sweet.

The tool-less tension adjustment on the body of the chainsaw allow for quick adjustments to chain tension and easy loosening to maintain the chain.

The last-piece here which is important is the auto-oiling function. Candidly, a lot of chainsaws have this function, but it is always good to see it in the Greenworks one. Make sure to store this flat instead of hanging, otherwise the oil will drip down the blades and onto whatever surface is below.

Greenworks 40V 16 inch chainsaw vs 12 inch chainsaw

The 16 inch chainsaw is super popular, but so is the 12 inch chainsaw.

A few key differences include the brushless motor on the 16 inch chainsaw vs the traditional brushed motor on the 12 inch. The 12 inch chainsaw is obviously shorter as well, not giving you the same cutting depth as is possible with the 16 inch chainsaw. Lastly, the 12 inch chainsaw comes with a 2 Ah battery instead of a 4 Ah battery, meaning it will not be able to make as many cuts.

Some other good Greenworks products.

All in all, the 12 inch is great for residential folks as well, but is going to limit you with larger trees and branches. Totally fine if that isn’t what you’re looking for.

The 12 inch can still do a lot of jobs, but falls short in power.

From a price perspective, the 16 inch chainsaw is only slightly more expensive. To me, it makes the most sense to go with the 16 inch to get a stronger battery, better tool, for only a little bit more money.

Final review: Greenworks GMAX 40V 16 inch cordless chainsaw

This is a top tier cordless chainsaw, on par with some of the gas chainsaws available on the market. In comparison to some of our other cordless chainsaws, this one is not only more powerful and longer lasting, but more durable as well.

What to look for in a chainsaw

A solid chainsaw is one of the most important tools a homeowner can have. Buying the right one is absolutely essential to your kids thinking you’re a cool man or woman. Chainsaws come in a variety of different shapes, sizes, types and models. Most are either gas or electric powered. Depending on your application of course, most people can get away with a 14” bar and chain. Unless you’re cutting up massive trees you probably don’t need anything bigger than that. 

16 inch version is serious stuff.

In addition to that, most people nowadays can probably get away with an electric model vs a more powerful, smoother cutting gas powered model. But it’s all personal preference. However, honestly I tend to always go with the bigger more powerful engines because I think they’ll last longer. So far that’s proven to be true, but I could just be wasting money. 

Must-have chainsaw features

Just make sure your chainsaw at least has a kickback reduction feature. This prevents you from losing one of your precious fingers! You only have 10 of them ya know! Kickback reductions can be in the form of the chain or bar itself. Basically these just prevent you from cutting too aggressively which prevents your saw from bouncing back on you. Or a chain brake which causes the chain to stop when it hits something hard or moves too abruptly 

Other features that are nice to have are more comfort-centric. These include tool-less tensioners, mufflers, anti-vibration, automatic chain oilers, etc.

The Black + Decker 20V MAX string trimmer and edger AND sweeper combo is just an insane value. This trimmer and edger combo not only comes in at a comically low price, but also includes a little handheld blower. 

Definitely on the affordable side.

While this is probably the least powerful combo on this list, it will certainly get the bare minimum job done for the bare minimum price. I recommend this Black and Decker string trimmer and edger combo to new homeowners or those with a really small yard.

The trimmer and edger are basically the same thing on this one, with the only difference being a swiveling head. Sadly, this means your edges will not be very deep. Your pockets will, however.

Again – this has awesome reviews on Amazon and is dirt cheap. This is the one I have convinced my parents (who live in a townhome) to grab. This is a lightweight electric option that is great if you are new to electric lawn tools.

You can get it shipped directly to your house from Amazon and that’s about it.

4. Worx WG170 GT Revolution 20V 12 Inch Grass Trimmer and Edger

A slight step up from the Black + Decker trimmer and edger combo, the Worx WG170 Revolution is another good one.

Can do both trimming and some light edging.

The Worx WG170 has a slightly more sophisticated edging system that has been really well built out. Specifically, they have some wheels that allow you to turn it on its side, and roll it in a straight line with the trimmer function instead of a traditional bladed edger.

This is pretty dang cool and innovative. Worx has a great reputation for spinning stuff up like this.  I also like battery positioning being more balanced on the WG170 trimmer and edger combo, plus the adjustable handle.

All around – this one is a more complete trimmer and edger combo, a great price, and a great company.

3. PowerSmart String Trimmer and Edger, 4 Stroke Weed Wacker with Straight Shaft

Stepping up the power game now and going with a gas one! The PowerSmart string trimmer and edger combo is a freaking beast.

Gas takes it to a new level of power.

A full on 4-stroke, 31 cc weed eater with a 13-inch cutting width, you will get some serious power out of the PowerSmart. Not only does the trimmer head deliver serious power (enough for commercial use), it also comes with a metal blade attachment to be used for edging.

Since it is mounted on the normal trimmer head, the edging attachment can also be used on super thick brush to chop it away and level it out or as a brushcutter attachment.

The only gas-powered trimmer and edger combo on my list, I had to include it because of the great price. Most string trimmers alone come in at $250+ – not to mention a separate edger.

2. Greenworks 40V 13″ Cordless String Trimmer and Edger

I love Greenworks. They have consistently well-built products, which is why I ranked this one number two. To me, this Greenworks 40V trimmer and edger combo is the best value out of all of these.

Never been used in this picture, but it can do a great job.

Greenworks reliability and craft perfection generally put them at the top of most of my lists. 

Coming in at 5.6 lbs and *way* less than $100 – the Greenworks 40V trimmer and edger combo flat out rocks. I like the 40V battery on this that can be used on their blower and a few of their other tools as well.

Similar to the WORX trimmer and edger combo, this one has a wheel on the side that allows you to roll it over and precisely and cleanly edge with the string from the trimmer. While this won’t be the highest-power trimmer on the market, it will get the job done.

1.EGO Power+ MHC1502 Multi Combo Kit: 15 String Trimmer, 8-Inch Edger & Power Head

EGO is a brand known for making rock solid battery powered products that compete with their gas counterparts. And yep, this one does. The EGO Power+ MHC1502 trimmer as a part of the attachment system and edger combo kit is going to provide best-in-class power.

The neat thing about this trimmer and edger combo kit is that the multi-tool head can also attach brushes, hedge trimmers, pole saws, blowers, and more. All of the tools you need from a single battery-powered head.

The EGO trimmer and edger head also uses the standard EGO 56V battery, which can be used with basically all EGO products – saving you a ton of money and space in your garage.

With a super powerful trimmer head and full-scale metal blade edger, this one is the most direct competition to its gas counterparts. I have to say, I think it is just as good as the gas ones.

What’s the difference between trimming and edging?

Let’s set the record straight here. Edging and trimming are two very different things that are often mixed up. 

Edging utilizes a motorized blade that digs into the dirt between a hard surface (street, driveway, sidewalk) and your yard. Edgers push up dirt and dig a small little trench that cleanly separates the yard and surface. Edgers can do a little bit of trimming if grass is growing over the surface, but are not designed for full-scale grass shredding.

You can do some edging with a weed eater if you have the right weed eater string. We developed GrassKicker weed eater string to make battery powered weed eaters work better and more powerful.

Trimmers are used to cut stray grass not reached or not accessible by mowing. Trimmers can also be used to cut the grass between hard surfaces and the yard, but don’t quite have the capability to edge as well as an edger does.

You can get close with just a string trimmer.

Do you need a trimmer if you have an edger? 

If you have an edger, I would definitely still recommend getting a trimmer. Not just for perfectly clean grass lines before edging, but also for any stray grass growing in other places around the yard – particularly around beds of mulch or other borders in the yard.

I use a trimmer after every time I mow. This helps clean up the stray grass I may have missed, or tough spots like around our mailbox.

An edger creates a nice gap between the surface and the grass.

Is it worth buying an edger?

In my opinion, absolutely. Most trimmers now come with detachable heads that allow for an edger to pop right on. Edgers are what take your yard from good to great. 

Can you edge with a trimmer? Can you trim with an edger?

If you are an absolute pro and have a high-powered trimmer, you can do some mild edging with a trimmer.

You still will not be able to dig way down deep to cause the best separation from surfaces, but it will give a similar appearance for a shorter amount of time.

You cannot trim with an edger unfortunately. The blade is just too big to finely cut small fragments of grass.

Let’s get started with Sun Joe’s best pressure washers!

7. Sun Joe SPX1000 1450 PSI 1.45 GPM 11.5-Amp Electric Pressure Washer, Green

What can only be assumed to be the first Sun Joe pressure washer (hence 1000), this pressure washer has a lot to like.

Stylish boots tho.

While it is smaller and less powerful than many of its counterparts, it is also nearly pocket sized. At less than two feet tall and a foot wide, this machine is not meant to blast away dirt. 

The SPX1000 1450 PSI pressure washer was designed for light cleaning. Think cars, windows, siding, and other surfaces that won’t get clean from a garden hose alone.

Some folks even use this for produce! It has a 21 ft long hose and will shred dirt at 1450 PSI. 

The lightest pressure washer of the bunch, don’t expect to be clearing driveways. But if you are looking for light-duty pressure washing – this is your best bet.

6. Sun Joe SPX4000-PRO 2030 Max PSI 1.76 GPM 14.5-Amp Electric Pressure Washer, w/Turbo Head Spray Nozzle

The Sun Joe SPX4000 is a huge step up from the SPX1000 in terms of power.

Consider this – you can still do the same amount of pressure that the SPX1000 does, or you can increase it by 50%. Talk about some serious versatility.

Takes up a lot of space but is sturdy.

The SPX4000 has a few bells and whistles that make it pretty sophisticated. The first is that this bad boy has a 54 fluid ounce tank that allows you to add detergent (bleach and water or soap) to the spray. These are great for cars (soap) or super dirty things (bleach). 

The SPX4000 pressure washer also has a quick-connect turbo head spray nozzle that cleans 40% faster than a standard nozzle. That’s a lot of percentages!

This one also has 4 other quick connect spray tips to solve a variety of problems. The ultimate showman, the SPX4000 can be a lover or a fighter  – you choose. 


The last comment I will make about this pressure washer is that it is dang sturdy. It comes with some legs so will not topple over like some of the others (more on that later).

5. Sun Joe SPX3200 GO ANYWHERE Electric Pressure Washer, 14.5-Amp, 1.76 GPM 2030 PSI (Max)

The Sun Joe SPX3200 is impressive. Consider all the things I said were great in a pressure  washer. It is mind-boggling how all of  those can fit into one small, odd looking box. 

But it does in the SPX3200. The dang pressure washer has wheels and you can pull it around.

Oh, and the power is on par with much larger pressure washers. This is the ideal pressure washer for anything you would clean on your driveway. 

Having an on-the-go pressure washer takes all the hassle out of pressure washing and constantly having to readjust, get more slack, and move the washer. Simply pull on the hose and get this thing to move over a couple of feet to keep going. 

A smaller detergent tank but still the 5 nozzle system found across Sun Joe’s pressure washers, this one has it all. 

And it’s on sale for a heck of a good price right now on Amazon.

4. Sun Joe SPX4600 3000 PSI MAX 1.30 GPM High Performance Electric Pressure Washer

The Sun Joe SPX4600 does not play around. This pressure washer is one of the highest performing pressure washers that Sun Joe has. 

Sturdy.

We are talking insane PSI levels – up to 3000 PSI. This is on par with many gas-powered pressure washers. With a 34-inch extension wand, 20 ft long hose, and a 35 ft power cord – this thing is meant for serious jobs.

Whereas some of the other Sun Joe pressure washers are for light-duty activities like windows or produce, this one could absolutely clean the grime off of your driveway with ease. 

This one also has a large detergent tank sitting right up front with the quick connect spray tips that accompany all Sun Joe pressure washers. 

The thing I love about this pressure washer is that it is extremely sturdy and bottom heavy, but still has wheels. It won’t topple over with some tension, but it also has a ton of maneuverability for easy relocation. We compared the SPX4600 to the Greenworks 2300 PSI pressure washer as well.

The Sun Joe SPX 4600 is a beast and should be treated as such. It’s currently on sale at Amazon, but can also be purchased from Sun Joe’s website.

3. Sun Joe SPX3001 2030 PSI 1.76 GPM 14.5 AMP Electric Pressure Washer with Hose Reel, Green

The big brother to the SPX3000, the Sun Joe SPX3001 has a hose reel on the top that differentiates it from its little brother.

The hose reel can be a game changer.

While it has all the same specifications as the SPX3000, it has this convenient hose reel at the top that can bring the hose back in for you instead of schlepping it all together yourself.

The hose reel is a double edged sword in my opinion. It is super convenient for clean up and makes storage easy, but it also makes the SPX3001 top-heavy compared to the other Sun Joe pressure washers. 

Yikes!

I also wish some of these earlier SPX3000 series pressure washers had brushless motors, but sadly they do not.

The SPX3001 is a big step up from some of the others and is definitely a great choice, but the top heaviness kicked it back to number 3 for me.

2. Sun Joe SPX3000 2030 Max PSI 1.76 GPM 14.5-Amp Electric High Pressure Washer

I know everyone thought that this would be #1, but it is not. Close, though. 

The SPX3000 has an absolutely insane amount of positive reviews on Amazon and is the top selling pressure washer of all time. Convincing.

The classic best-seller.

Here are the positives:

  • Decent pressure
  • 5 quick connect spray nozzles including a soap nozzle
  • Nice detergent tank
  • Lightweight
  • Inexpensive

There are a few things that ding the SPX3000 – namely the hose connection point. It seems totally hit or miss on if this happens, but some seem to have connection problems where the hose is plugged in. This area is plastic and seems to either break or not completely seal the hose off, causing leakage.

This one is great and likely won’t break on you, but I think the SPX3500 has the necessary upgrades to prevent these.

Alright, y’all – we are here! This one is easily the coolest looking Sun Joe Pressure washer, but that is not why I ranked it #1.

The Sun Joe SPX3500 2300 Max PSI pressure washer is a powerful pressure washer that is a slightly souped up version of the other SPX3000s. It has more power, a brushless motor, and a nice big detergent tank.

The brushless motor is why I ranked this Sun Joe Pressure washer number one for home use. Brushless motors last significantly longer and outperform traditional motors. 

Another huge differentiator in the SPX3500 is the brass hose connector. After hearing feedback from thousands of people on the SPX3000, Sun Joe realized having a plastic hose connector simply would not cut it. There were complaints of leakage around the fitting, which is not great for an electric pressure washer.

The SPX3500 pressure washer from Sun Joe is the best one they have – hands down.  An evolution of the SPX3000 – it fixes all the issues and complaints with one of the hottest selling pressure washers ever.

What to look for in a pressure washer

You gotta know what to look for on these Mr Joe’s bad boys! Each one looks basically the same, has a complex acronym name, and comes in a similar color.

Nozzles Matter

When choosing a pressure washer, you should pay attention to the nozzles included in the package. Two types of spray nozzles are available, adjustable spray nozzles that can be controlled and quick-connect nozzles with predefined spray patterns.  

The predefined spray patterns typically come in different angles, allowing for you to quickly switch between a broad, lower pressure spray or a narrow, higher pressure stream.

Soap tank

Additionally, you may want to consider a soap tank – equipped pressure washer. Some of these pressure washers have “foam cannons” where you can simply add some soap and it will mix it in with the water. Pretty cool.

I recommend a soap tank for cars and windows.

Wheels on pressure washers

Despite these seemingly minor features, they can have a big impact, especially with larger units. No sense in lugging around one of these in your yard and tripping all over the place.

Hose types

There’s a big difference between how easy or difficult it is to use a pressure washer based on the kind of hose that comes with it. Stiff, rigid hoses make it extremely difficult to have any maneuverability without messing up the job or knocking over the base.

Portability

Even if this has the drawback of making the unit less powerful, a portable, smaller pressure washer will be a better choice if you have to move around or carry the unit with you. Most of us do this, especially if you are doing the exterior of your house.

Totally depends on the job you are trying to do.

Pressure washers: Gas vs. Electric

Gas pressure washers have been around forever and probably aren’t going anywhere – but electric pressure washers are on the up and up like all the other lawn tools.

Electricity and water! What can go wrong?

The maintenance and cost of gas pressure washers are greater, including things like air filter changes, spark plugs, and more. Gas pressures are also insanely loud. However, electric washers simply have a power source and a button and are far quieter.

Ultimate Guide to Getting Lawn Stripes (2024 Update)

Lawn stripes: more elusive than Bigfoot. I want them. You want them. Everybody who takes pride in their lawn wants them. I’m going to show you how Lawn Striping your yard is not only possible, but likely easier than you think.

This fella got creative with his lawn stripes – I love it.

I know the Bible says to never envy your neighbor’s house, but they didn’t have grass in that region of the world at that point, so I doubt that applied here (Lord, forgive me for these awful jokes). Those gorgeous contrasting shades of light and dark green that throws me into an envious rage each time I pass ole Jeff’s house at the corner of my street. Clean and professional.

What if I were to tell you it’s not as hard as it looks? I can’t promise your front yard will look like Fenway park in the middle of June, but I can provide you some easy tips to help accentuate those lines and make your lawn the envy of the neighborhood.

Let’s get going:

What causes lawn Stripes?

There are 2 main drivers behind the appearance of lawn stripes – light and direction the grass is laying. When your grass is laying towards you, you see the dark pattern, and the light pattern comes when the grass is laying in the opposite direction of you. It’s actually pretty simple if you think about it. You mow one direction, and the grass lays down in the direction that you are moving the mower. Go back the other way, and you’ve got your contrast.

Achieving the basic lawn stripe pattern is easy. All you have to is mow in opposite directions. Below I’ve provided some simple steps that can help bring those lawn stripes to the next level.

First thing’s first – Types of Grass

The type of grass that brings out the best contrast between stripes in your lawn is a hotly debated topic. The experts at NASA have concluded that cool-season grass accentuates the lawn stripes the best. What the heck is a cool-season grass? Your fescues, bluegrass, and ryes to name a few. Warm-season grasses like Bermuda and Zoysia have stronger and stiffer blades that stand up more quickly, causing that initial striping that you see after mowing to fade away quickly. One obvious rule of thumb: the flimsier the blade of grass, the more profound the lawn stripes.

This isn’t to say that you can’t get stripes out of warm-season grasses like Bermuda or Zoysia, its just a little bit tougher and short-lived.

Sharpen lawn mower blades for best lawn stripes

A common problem we see in lawns is the light haze that can occur a couple days after mowing, causing those stripes to fade more quickly. This is caused by the tear on the grass from the previous mow, and the edge of the blades of grass looking jagged, rather than cleanly sliced. Best way to avoid this common peril is to sharper your mower blades at least 3 times a year. Good rule of thumb for when to sharpen each mowing season? Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day.

Keep those blades sharp as samurai swords!

Water Helps the grass grow back stronger

One additional hack to help bring out the stripes in your lawn – water directly after you mow. The droplets weight down the grass blades and help emphasize the difference between light and dark in your lawn. The water dies, and the blades stay in their position. Might sound pretty trivial, but it has made a huge difference in my lawn. It’s an easy task that you need to do anyways, so why not knock out 2 birds with one stone?

Ditch the Bagger on your lawn mower

The biggest misconception I hear about when it comes to lawn stripes – bag the excess clippings to increase the appearance of lawn stripes. This has very little to no affect on the appearance of your lawn and deprives it of valuable nutrients that come from the mulching process. The excess clippings break down and create a thatch layer rich in potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus to name a few.  Natural fertilizer!!

The only time it makes sense to use a bagger is if you’ve let your grass grow too high. I know, it happens to the best of us. If you start off without the bagger and are seeing big lumps of grass clippings laying on the surface, then it might be best to use the bag for that one time. But constant bagging, week after week, deprives your lawn of rich nutrients and natural fertilizer that your lawn needs. And its free!!

To get lawn stripes, you need a lawn striping kit

A striping kit is basically a roller that latches onto the back of your mower, that helps push those blades of grass down even further. This is what the major ballparks and sports arena’s use that basically make your lawn look as if it’s been painted in 2 shades of green.

Below, I’ve highlighted some of the best striping kits on the market for the most popular mowers out there. Most of these kits are after-market, and are not produced by the mower manufacturer. Why is that? Because they’re scared to get into the game.
